PERREYS POV
I can't breathe. The pain is freaking unbelievable. I can't look down at my leg, but I know it's broken, and that I can feel that I'm in a growing pool of blood.
"Perrey!" Coach runs up and cradles my back. "Oh my gosh. Oh, Lord. He grimaces as he glances down at my leg. "Breathe. Deep breaths."
I hold back another screech of pain as the pain circulates up and down my leg.
"Someone! Call her parents. Call 911!" Coach shouts urgently, and I hear people moving around quickly. Someone brings a towel and hands it to Coach. He wipes off my face, and then drapes it over my leg.
"Get it off." I whisper desperately. "It hurts too much. Take it off, take it off."
He sighs and takes it off. I hear people running, and my dad runs over.
"Perrey! Geez!" He sucks in his breath. "The ambulance is on their way. I saw it all, oh gosh." He rubs my arm. "I'm sorry. They'll be here soon."
Mom comes over with a doctor.
"I can't. I can't. Mommy, it hurts so bad-" I suck in my breath as a new wave of pain sweeps over me.
"You'll be ok. You're ok." Mom says.
But am I? Will I be ok?
WHITNEYS POV
"Watch the other girls," Coach Pete says, and points to Perrey Eliot, who's getting ready to do her second vault.
"Let's go, Perrey!" I shout.
She takes off running, and flies off the vault table swiftly.
"Look at her form," Carolyn notes, "She's gonna stick it again."
Perrey's feet hit the mat squarely, but for some odd reason, her leg gives out below her, and there's a frighteningly loud snap.
I shudder as a scream escapes Perrey's lips, and she falls back onto the matt clutching her leg.
"Oh my gosh." Delaney covers her hand with her mouth. "Coach Pete!"
He comes over. "Whitney. You're up next. You can't get frazzled by this. Keep your head on and focus."
Focus? How can I focus when someone just snapped their leg in front of me? I take a breath and try not to look at Perrey.
Soon, they cart her out of the arena and wipe down the mat.
"Focus, Whitney. You got this." Delaney whispers to me. She rubs my arm. "Your practice will show. You've been working so hard, so let it show!"
I smile at her, and give her a quick hug. But my mind is thinking, Perrey practiced hard too, and she still got injured. I force the negative thoughts out of my mind and step up to the podium.
