PERREY'S POV

"Ready?" Mom opens my car door and helps me out. I lean on my crutches and hobble toward the gym.

"No."

Sighing, Mom locks the car and walks next to me. "I'm sorry."

I shrug. "Nothing you can do. Nothing I can do either." It's my turn to sigh.

Mom opens the door of the gym for me and I thank her before awkwardly walking as best I can into the locker room. I feel very self conscious. And depressed. Negative emotions swirl through my head, and I set my gym bag inside a locker, grab my water bottle and then, grabbing my crutches again, I mentally prepare myself for a rough practice.

As I enter the main gym, my teammates run over to me.

"Oh my gosh, Perrey!"

"What happened?"

"How long are you going to be out for?"

I shake my head, barely holding my tears at bay. Then I take a deep breath. "I'm...I'll tell you all when I tell coach."

"Ok." The disperse towards the main floor and I follow them as best I can.

Coach Ed comes over and pats me on the shoulder. "Hey, Perrey, how are you?"

I shrug. "Fine. How are you?"

"I'm good. How long did the doctor say you'd be out for?"

Coming in as if on cue, Mom makes her way over to Coach Ed. "Hey, Coach."

"How long is Perrey going to be out for? We want to get her working on upgrades for Nationals as soon as possible." He then turns to me. "Did you know you qualified for World's?"

My eyes open wide. "What??"

"Yup." He grins. "So how long will it be till you can get back on track?"

"Well..." Mom looks at me. My teammates come over to hear the diagnosis. I'm feeling very emotionally unstable right now...

"While doing the scan, the doctors found a rare disease in Perrey called Fibrous Displaysia, that affects the growth of bone. Tissues grow in the place bone, weakening them and causing pain. There's no cure for it as of now, but Perrey has to wait longer than if she had fractured her leg normally. She's also getting more x-rays to make sure she doesn't break any more bones, and she has to train much more carefully."

There's silence for a while. Then one of my teammates speaks up quietly.

"Are you going to quit, Perrey?"

I blink slowly. "I-I don't know. I guess...I might have to."

WHITNEY'S POV

"Welcome to Minnesota!" The captain says over the loudspeakers. "Please remain seated until the seatbelt light above you turns off. We hope you had a good flight, and we hope you fly American Airlines again soon! Thank you for flying American."

I lean over and squeeze my mom's hand. "How are you feeling?"

"Tired." Rubbing her hand over her forehead, mom sighs. "But I'm glad to finally be here."

Next to me, Sterling groans. "I'm feeling sick."

"You'll get over it." I grin.

Finally, we get off the plane and collect our luggage. Sterling flags us a taxi, and soon, we're on our way to our new apartment.

Once we're finally semi-settled in, with our bags in the right rooms, I pull out my camera and start recording.

"Hey guys! It's Whitney. We just arrived in Minnesota, and I'm super excited. I'm gonna give you guys a quick apartment tour now." I lead them through the house, and then collapse back onto my bed.

"Anyways, Mom has an appointment bright and early tomorrow, so I'll see you then!"

Switching off my camera, I toss it onto my bag and lie staring at the ceiling.

What is life going to be like here?

It'll take some some time to get used to, but I'd better adjust fast.
