a/n: lol i updated bc i saw an insta post about this book 😳

WHITNEY'S POV

"Morning," I say gruffly, climbing up onto the barstool.

"Hey." Sterling shoves the milk carton towards me and continues eating his cereal.

"Where's mom?"

"Sleeping." Pulling up his backpack from the floor, he takes out his laptop and opens it. "Oh, dad said to tell you that he thinks he might have found a gym for you."

My eyebrows shoot up, and I'm instantly awake. "Really? Where? When would I go?"

"He just emailed me the information. Gimme a sec to pull it up."

Impatiently, I tap my spoon on the edge of the bowl, waiting for Sterling to find it. Finally, he does.

"Here. Rochester Gymnastics Academy. 17 minutes away from here, offering a free trial class for you-"

"When??"

"Whenever. If you want, I can take you after I drop off Mom at her appointment..."

I jump up, and my bowl of cereal almost tips over. "YES! PLEASE."

"M'kay, you got it."

PERREY'S POV

"Mom! I can't skip practice two days in a row!" I groan in exasperation and facepalm.

"Perrey, this is ridiculous. You can't train seriously anymore." Mom sighs. "Don't you get it? Your gymnastics career is practically over now."

"No. I don't. Don't YOU get it? I can't quit. And I'm not gonna." I plop down onto the couch again, folding my arms and glaring at the floor.

"Even if it's not now, it's going to have to be at some point." Mom says quietly. "I'm really sorry. But you have to come face reality."

"What is reality?" I grumble, kicking my boot against the floor.

"Fine. You can go to practice today, but you'll have to stop...eventually."

Slowly, I nod my head. "Okay."

+++++++

"C'mon, Jenna! You got this!" I lean on my crutches and cheer for my teammate as she runs through her bars routine.

She makes a clean dismount, and I high five her as she comes back to the chalk bin.

"How are you?" Jenna asks randomly.

I shrug. "Uh, I guess I'm fine..."

"I know it's probably hard for you to watch everyone else," she says, frowning.

"Well, yeah, I guess."

"What did your doctor say you could do?"

I bite my lip. "Not much at all. Conditioning, handstands, walkovers, turns, that's kinda it. Not even jumps. Even once I get my cast off, I don't think I'll be able to do much. There's too much risk of another bone getting injured."

Jenna grimaces. "I'm sorry. That sucks."

I nod, unable to think of anything else to say.

"Perrey! Start doing something!" My coach yells over at me, and I hobble away from Jenna.

Maybe mom's right. Who knows? I'm gonna have to quit eventually, so why not now?
