Jason.

The three of us stood in the hallway, eyes wide and filled with wonder. We'd of course seen high schools before, on TV and stuff, but actually standing here was a completely different experience. I was overwhelmed. My wolf could smell everything, my ears could hear everything, and it was recoiling in my mind anxiously, ready to protect itself if need be. I found myself breathing deeply to calm it down.

We'd been to the student office to sort out our schedules, and we were about to part ways for the first time in our public school life. Frankie and Dean had scored lockers on the west side of the building, near the science labs. I, on the other hand, had been given a locker in the east corridor, which was apparently small, quiet and ran adjacent to the library.

I looked over at my friends. Dean's grey-green eyes were following a multitude of girls, and I could see the wolfish hunger brewing in them. Frankie had clearly noticed it too, because when our eyes met she simply raised her eyebrows and clicked her fingers in front of Dean's face. He jolted back to reality, smirking to himself.

"Remember the rules, Casanova," Frankie said sternly. Her golden brown eyes glistened warningly at Dean. "Adrenaline equals wolf-man, so lay off the poor women."

"I'll be careful." He offered her a toothy smile with his reply. She just rolled her eyes and tucked her hands into the pockets of her baggy jeans.

"Jason, what have you got first two periods?" She asked, eyes wide. Although she was acting cool, I could tell that she was as overwhelmed as I was. Facing this together sounded exciting, but separating from each other was mildly terrifying. I realised now how isolated our existence on the packland had actually been, and how much I felt like an outsider in the human world.

"Um," I pulled out my already crumpled timetable from my back pocket. "English, with Miss Piston and then History with Mr Lancroft."

Frankie pursed her lips and nodded. "Okay. Well, Dean and I have a Biology class and then, uh, Maths, I think ." The worry was evident in her voice. Dean just looked surprised, as though he hadn't quite realised that we might not be together all day.

"Crap. Do you have any classes with us?" He asked, extending his hand. I handed my timetable to him, and he held it up next to his and Frankie's. He frowned slightly, his eyes scanning the page. Frankie pointed one of her many-ringed fingers at my schedule.

"Geography... and it looks like we have gym together too." She pointed out. Great, I thought to myself, literally two classes out of, like, seven. Frankie clearly picked up on the nervous pheromones wafting off of me, because she reached out and gave my arm a comforting squeeze.

"We'll see you at lunch?" She offered with a warm smile. I nodded hurriedly. She grinned, satisfied that I would survive without her, and gave me fistpump. Dean did the same, his knuckles clunking against mine clumsily.

"See you later bro." He chided. Then the two of them were off, heading towards the west corridor and the science labs. I watched them leave for a few seconds, a little jealous that they got to go everywhere together. Shaking off the feeling, I reassured myself that this wasn't such a bad thing.

You wanted to meet humans, and now you're going to have to. That's a good thing.

I managed to put my books in my locker before the bell rang, and I felt pretty confident that I could find the English room if I just followed the numbering system on the doors. The hallways emptied as I searched for room 134, and they were almost empty by the time I found it, tucked away in a corner not far from my locker, but nowhere near rooms 133 or 135. Halting at the closed door, I peeked through the peephole to see if the class had started, and breathed a sigh of relief when I didn't see a teacher.
