Chapter 1: A Homecoming.
The diner was packed with what seemed to be thousands of people, and it didn't seem like it was going to let up anytime soon. A frown formed on my lips as beads of sweat started to form on my skin. The manager wasn't too fond of using the air conditioning, and no one had enough balls to open the windows that weren't rusted into the window frame; pair that with the Florida weather around this time of year, and you have a situation that is bound to melt the mascara straight off your eyelashes.
"Monika, table five is getting impatient. Get off your ass and take this tray to them." The cook shouted angrily into the break room.
With a very intended roll of the eyes, I got up from the small stool that sat against the wall, and made my way in to pick up the tray and walk into the dining area to deliver a tray of food to table five. Although they were polite about the lateness of arrival, they didn't seem like they would withhold any extra tips either.
As I passed by the cash register, I checked the clock. Thank God, I only had a half hour left until my shift was over, or else I would probably go mad.
"You need to go wait on table nine, sweetheart." Janine, one of my nicer co-workers, said to me. "Jess went outside for a smoke, and her break won't be over for another ten minutes."
I nodded, reaching into my pocket for my tiny notepad and a pen. "She just better have her pay docked a little for going on her break early." I scoffed, glancing at Janine before walking back between the long row of tables.
I would never say that I detested my job-- for God's sake it was my only source of income for the last three and a half years-- but I wished beyond anything that I could find myself a better job. A job with windows in the building that worked, and air conditioning that the manager wasn’t too frugal to use.
I sighed to myself before reaching the table of the next customer. "Hello, my name is Monika and I'll be your waitress today. What would you like to drink this afternoon?" I tried my best to use my most enthusiastic voice, but it failed as the stress of my day reflected through my tone, unintentionally.
"How 'bout a glass of you." The man said, a smirk behind his tone.
I flushed before looking up from my notepad only a little bit, not even looking at the male. This was not the first time a man has said this sort of thing to me in one form or another. "That ain't on the menu." I redirected my gaze to the notepad. "Maybe you should suggest something orderable."
He chuckled a little bit. "Just an iced tea, sweetie. I just thought that maybe since it's been a long time since you've seen me, you might be missin' me."
My eyebrows furrowed as I lifted my head to look him in the eyes. How did I not notice him before? "Norman? Oh my god, what are you doin' here?" A smile spread across my lips.
"I had a little bit of a vacation and decided to come back home for a month or two. There ain't much goin' on at the moment." He explained, his blue eyes giving me that old feeling again.
Norman and I had been friends for as long as I could remember, although we didn't really keep in touch once he made it in the Hollywood business.
"It's quite a nice surprise." I smiled, toying with the pen I held in my hands. "How've you been getting' along these days?"
He nodded before replying, almost like he was confirming his own thoughts to himself. "No, I've been. Really good. What about you? How did you end up working at a place like this?"
I shook my head. "I've been workin' here for four years and it gets worse each day. I don't know how I haven't quit this job yet."
"Wanna know somethin'?" He chuckled. "I don't know either."
I rolled my eyes. "Either order somethin' or move on, Norman, I have a job to do."
He smiled softly, the skin by the corner of his eyes wrinkling. "Truth is, I just want the iced tea. I came by because your mom told me that you would be here."
"So, you visited my mother." I said, trying not to roll my eyes again.
Norman laughed a little too loudly, causing some of the surrounding customers to angrily look his way. "So I did. 'M sorry."
"It's fine. I'll go get your iced tea." My smile had faded once he mentioned my mother. Through all the years of our friendship, he should have known better than to let my mother know that he was back in town- because Lord only knows that my sweet, caring mother was only going to try to set us up like she was cupid. She never once thought that maybe we were just friends, and that we were only going to ever be friends.
"Thanks, Mon." He chuckled. "Maybe I'll stop by the house again later."
"Yeah, you do that." I rolled my eyes a little bit, my good mood almost diminishing before I could stop it. I walked back to the kitchen while starting to untie my work apron.
I couldn't help but be a little bit upset because of Norman stopping at my mother's place like that. It's not that it pissed me off.. okay, maybe it pisses me off a little.. I thought, hanging up the apron and punching in my time card. Very quickly, I filled a glass with iced tea and placed a few pieces of a lemon in a tiny bowl. Norman had always liked fresh lemon in his iced tea…
I shook my head and pulled a straw from the utensil caddy from the counter and walked back out to the table, not intending to be as social as the first time. I set the glass and bowl on the table in front of Norman rather loudly and thumped his check against his chest, making him rather surprised.
"What's your problem?" I heard him call after me as I made my way to the exit.
That'll teach him to just show up to my mother's doorstep and let her know that he's back in his hometown. Screw him. He didn't understand what this was going to cause when I arrived home.
