Shoulda' ended it before it started,
all she ever got was broken hearted.

Ever since Genéve told me about what happened with her and her ex Jonathan, she hasn't been talking to me. I tried reaching out to her but she told me she needed space so I respected that but I needed to know why. So...I reached out to Sophie, Genéve had given me her number incase anything happened to her. We spoke over the phone and agreed to meet at Big John's Pizza, the best pizza in Jersey according to her. We agreed on a meeting time of 2:30 PM, and right now it's 2:20, oh shit.

I get up quickly and leave the house, making sure to scream at Grayson on the way out that I would be back. I hopped into my car and drove off to the establishment.

"You must be the infamous Ethan," a girls voice spoke above me as I chewed on my pizza, which was indeed the best I've ever had.

"Oh yes hi, and you must be Sophie," I spoke in between chews then holding out my right hand due to my pizza smothered left. She shook it and sat down across from me. "Oh, I'm sorry," I look down at my food in realization, "I should've waited for you to get your order. I can pay for yours if you'd like?"

"No dude, that's fine, I ordered before I even got here," She bashfully smiled at me as her eyes shifted to the to go counter behind me.

"Black olives and green peppers, order for Sophie!"

"Speaking of," she chuckled and got up to get her food. She sat back down and opened the box, beginning to munch on a slice. "So, about Genéve," she covered her mouth.

"Yes, Genéve. She finally told me what happened between her and Jonathan."

"Mhm."

"And after that night, she hasn't texted me other than her saying she needs space." I grabbed another slice as I finished chewing the crust of the last one.

"Yeah, she's very vocal when she needs time to herself. Bringing up Jonathan and their story is still a tough subject for her so it probably brought up a lot of emotions she attempted to bury a long time ago."

"But I need to know, is there something she didn't tell me?"

"Well what exactly did she say?" She leans forward in her seat, taking a sip of her drink.

I explained to her the story Genéve had told me about a week ago, her facial expressions didn't change once, just in a pondering state. She had clearly heard this story before.

"Yeah, she did leave out some parts." She set her half eaten slice down and put her elbows on the table, sighing, "Jonathan, he treated her like she was a piece of shit. He made everything she did into a huge problem."

"Like what?"

"Well I don't know if you've noticed, but she's in love with her curls and culture. So she always took longer showers so that the specially made shampoo she bought would soak into her scalp to make the new hairs that grew out even curlier. He would get so aggravated when they went on date nights or special occasions. Sometimes when they'd lay in bed together she would ramble on and on about interesting facts about her culture and apparently he didn't want to hear, and I quote, 'irrelevant shit that has no meaning, your culture is being slaves to white people.'"

I choked on my drink, "Wait, he really said that?"

"Yes," she nodded her head, "but she took it because she was madly in love with him. I feel bad that she had to endure that for 'love'."

I looked down at my last two slices, having lost my appetite. I can't believe someone could possibly even think of saying that to an African American, especially one who is proud of who they are and their ancestry. All of this made me want to throw up, Genéve is the last person who deserves this.

"Anyway," Sophie interrupts my thought process, "I have to go meet with my girlfriend so I'm going to have to excuse myself from this lovely discussion," she smiled.

"I didn't know you were lesbian."

"Did you know I was Asian?"

"I mean yeah, it's not very hard to notice," I chuckle and take a sip of my coke.

"Well Ethan, just treat Genéve right, unlike Jonathan and your asshole of a twin brother."

"Yeah, I'll make sure to do that."

She smiled at me one last time and walked out, leaving me alone in the pizza parlor.

A/N: i totally forgot to mention this in the 1st book but Genéve's hair doesn't match the girl I set up as who would play her character, her hair is still long but it's naturally extremely curly. just to let y'all know. also, new character!
