-That night-
They had decided the girls’ fates, they would work for the army but rules had to be set. Paul and Pat brought the girls back into Tord's office.
“We have decided you will stay.” He began and Hyacinth's blind eyes widened in surprise. “But there are rules,” both of the girls nodded, “Rule one: You both will have to get chips that track your health, the data from the chips is sent to the medic and to me.” Kathiren seemed a bit nervous about that part but she shook her head and looked at him again. “Rule Two: You will train with the Newbies.”
“Makes sense, You don't know whether or not we are to be trusted, my only request for that is when Hyacinth trains with her monster form, just make sure where ever she is, has a high ceiling.” Kathiren added and He nodded in agreement.
“Agreed, anyways Rule Three: Hyacinth will be part of an experimental program, that might help her get her sight back.” Tord said calmly unsure of how they would react to that.
“And if it fails?” Kathiren asked, her eyes narrowing at the word ‘fail.’
“Then she will be specially trained to fight without her sight.” Tord explained, and Kathiren looked at him, before gesturing for him to continue. “Rule Four: The normal rules for soldiers apply to you two. Rule Five: Don't try anything, and tell someone, preferably Pat, Paul, or I, if there is something wrong.”
“Because you two are saying that you are experiments, we need to know if there is something wrong.” Pat explained and Hyacinth nodded, but Kath hesitated before nodding too.
“Good. Now Paul and Pat will take you to the Uniform Department so they can start working on your uniforms.” Tord said, watching as the four of them left.
-later-
Kathiren was being measured for her new uniform, it was a female with red hair and ice blue eyes.
“I've never measured someone your size before.” She commented, “But that's a good thing! Also.. You have to take off the hoodie..” Kathiren hesitated, “What is there something wrong?... Oh wait I never told you my name! I'm Liv!” The redhead introduced herself finally after 15 minutes.
“Kathiren…” Kath replied still nervous about her appearance.
“It's good to finally know your name!.. But your hoodie is way too large and it might mess the measurements.” Liv explained, and Kathiren nodded, she took a deep breath and took off the hoodie. Revealing the experimental clothing and glowing metal bands on her upper arms. The bands glowed blue and were just barely out of line with her skin. The skin around the bands was all scarred up, from her constantly trying to get them off. “... Damn..” Was the only word that escaped Liv’s mouth, at the sight of the bands. “Do they know about that?..” She asked, Kath shook her head, “They probably should.. How many are there?...”
“...in total 7… the two on my arms.. two on my legs… two across my chest … and one on my neck…” Kath managed to put her words together, while unknowingly putting her hand up on the bandages around her neck, that were now clearly visible. She looked down, her experimental clothing was a green-gray tank with her experiment name in bold black lettering, with dark grey khakis, which had no pockets whatsoever. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Liv walk out. She slid down a wall and hugged her knees close to her. A part of her just wanted to sit there and cry, but the more she pondered it the more angry she became with those responsible for her and her sister's suffering. She just wished she could be normal, well at least enough where she could live a semi-normal life. After a few minutes, there was a knock at the door, she looked at the door. “...W-Who's there?..” She asked, her words tripping on her tongue, and she hated herself for sounding so weak.
“Kathiren.. It's Me again and I have Pat..” Said the voice from the other side of the door, Kath recognised the voice as Liv’s, she took a breath.
“You...can come in..” She sighed, while getting up off the ground. The door opened and Liv walked back in, followed by Pat. Pat had this concerned but serious look on his face, it seemed familiar to her.
“Kathiren?..” He asked, she looked at him, “Are you alright?..” When had she seen him like this? When she didn't respond, he moved closer to her. “Kathiren?” He asked again, she looked at the mirrors behind him and jumped. She didn't see herself, she saw a girl who was sitting. The girl had her head bowed, with blood on her clothing. “Kathiren!” Pat called, he looked behind him at the mirrors and Kath’s reflection looked at him. Then it split into two people. But they were so blurry, it was hard to tell who they were. But one had blond hair, and it reached out at the mirror. A hand reached through, but the metal bands on Kath began to glow brighter. A chain appeared on the hand’s wrist, dragging it back into the mirror. “WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!!?” He looked at Kath, who was doubled over in pain. Liv reacted faster than he had and ran to her aid, as soon as Liv’s hand made contact with Kath’s shoulder, something threw her back. Liv was going back into the door, the force of the impact made her go through it. Kath looked at him, she was crying.
“..He doesn't know… I DIDN’T MEAN TO!” She screeched holding her head, Hyacinth ran in and wrapped her arms around her sister. Kath’s eyes closed and she fell limp into her sister's arms. Hyacinth set her down gently, once she was sure her sister was asleep, she sighed in relief. Pat looked over to see other soldiers help Liv to the medical bay. He looked back at the two sisters, he watched as Hyacinth tapped on one of the metal bands on Kathiren's arm. The blue glow rippled outward like water, she seemingly reached her hand into the metal band and pulled something out. She looked at it and growled, she stood up and handed it to him it. It was a small piece of what looked like a circuit board.
“Hopefully, that should fix the problem.” She growled, “It's an activator, they were trying to tear her apart from the inside.” Pat could hear it in her voice, her anger, her fear, and her understanding. “Thank god they gave me the ability to calm her down if she is having issues. She's asleep right now.. I suggest you get what you are doing finished before she wakes up. She's not going to have any memory of what happened.” Hyacinth sighed, sitting down out in the other room. Pat was speechless, and confused.
“What the hell just happened?..” He asked himself, as Ada, the department head, took over Kathiren's measurements. Aaron came in and put a needle into her shoulder, inserting the microchip. Pat walked out and headed to the science department.
“Hey, Pat what's up?” Asked the head of the department, Pat handed him the circuit. “Wow.. This is really an remarkable little thing!”
“How so?” Pat asked, and the head looked at him.
“This can activate a spirit to manifest, but there's enough energy in this to activate two spirits!” The head explained excitedly, “Maybe we can use this little thing to send soldiers to the spirit world! Without killing them!”
“Great… you can keep it.. Anyways I have to go. See you later Bill!” Pat called walking out of the department, now he needed to show Hyacinth her room and put Kathiren in hers.
