Chapter 2: Backfire

I was awoken the following morning by someone violently shaking me. The person repeatedly calls my name. "Harmony! Harmony, wake up!"

"What," I croak out lethargically.

"Do not 'what' me! I brought you into this damn world," my mother furiously snaps.

I sit up and groan, both out of restlessness and irritation. "Yes, mother," I moan out, my eyes half open.

"Tell me what happened between you and Mr. Sanders after dinner," she suddenly urges as she sits on the side of my bed.

I glance at the time on my nightstand's clock. 7:13 AM. I look back at my mother before adjusting my scarf. "It went well, mom," I reply, feeling myself slightly dozing off. I hadn't gone to sleep until 4 AM.

"'Well' as in...," she says, trailing off as a signal for me to continue.

"We didn't do anything. We just talked and he um...," I slowly trailed off, coming up with a lie from the top of my head. "He took me out to eat."

"To eat? You already ate at home," she questions, suddenly getting upset.

"I only had a salad, no dressing. But it didn't have tomatoes," I reply simply, feeling a bit more upset.

"Oh. Well that's good. Go on," she encourages.

"Nothing much happened after dinner. We just talked about where we plan to live once we're married. Here, California, New York, maybe even Georgia. We haven't decided yet," I say, gently rubbing my eye. I sure have been lying a lot.

"Here, of course. Florida's a wonderful state to live in," she replies.

"I agree," I lied, refraining myself from yawning in front of her.

"Well, I'm surprised you haven't fucked up like I expected you to," she smirks, standing up.

"Yeah, mom... Is it possible if I could get... liposuction," I suddenly ask her, remembering that I told Rein I would get surgery.

"Liposuction? Is that what you want," she questions with slight amusement.

"I think that me being... smaller would get Rein to marry me faster," I explain, hopefully. I like my body the way it is, but if it'll get my parents off my chest then so be it.

"I never thought you'd ask," she replies with a sly smirk. "I'll be sure to schedule you an appointment."

"Thank you, mother," I thank her, graciously before lying back onto my pillow. I close my eyes, eager to get in a few more hours of rest.

_____________

I wake up again, this time by noon, to the sound of my phone ringing on my nightstand. I grab the phone and press the answer button without checking the called ID.

"Hello," I groan into the speaker.

"Good afternoon, Babe," I hear the deep, smooth voice of my best friend, Stacy, resonate into my ear.

"Good afternoon, Ace," I greet him tiredly as I sit up, throwing my comforter off of me.

"Harp, you haven't called me in two days! Two days! What's up with that," he questions in mock hurt as he called me by my childhood nickname. Hearing him call me that emitted so many flutters in my gut.
