Chapter 1

Naomi's perspective

I won't say I love my life. Ever since the world got over polluted and global warming nearly destroyed us, I have been a wreck. I lost my brother in the flood that happened when the polar ice caps melted and my mom went missing after a huge fire that tore through the woods while we were camping. In 2020, it was announced that we were doomed and that if we continued to live like we do, the world become too unstable to live in and we could die. Some people say we could live on mars instead but they sent people over to see and they said it was too unstable to live in. So, we've made a few changes. Scientists created a machine that was made to turn trash that doesn't decay like plastic and turn it into nothing. It just disappears. So we cleaned everything and developed better technology so there was no more pollution.

We are doing better but the earth is still in bad shape. And being a teen in these conditions is no picnic. The government is tough and one misstep can lead to lifetime in jail. The government will send robots to come for you and take you in.

My dad, the only family member I have left, is on the run from the government. He littered once and the cops came after him. He escaped and brought me with him. He taught me to shoot and taught me self defence so I could defend myself if the cops ever saw me.

Austin's perspective

I can't go on like this. Ever since my family died in the flood, I have been living wherever I could. I applied for as many jobs as I could but I could only manage to get a job as a liter cop. I need to patrol the streets watching for litter or people littering. Then, I report them. I have a small apartment in a small building on the bad side of town where the technology is less advanced and where there is graffiti on almost every building.

I have been depressed ever since I lost my family and need to stay away from all weapons and sharp objects so that I can't cut myself. I also keep all electronics bolted down and only have a shower so I can't electrocute or drown myself because I get so depressed. But never has it occured to me that if I hadn't had my job, that I might never have met the girl to change everything.

Naomi's perspective

I woke up and rubbed my eyes. I climbed out of bed and looked at the clock expecting it to be early. It was 7:00 though. I sighed and grabbed my black tee shirt and black skinny jeans. I went into the bathroom and looked at my bright red hair and emerald green eyes. I got dressed and did my hair. I grabbed my gun hollister and put my handgun into it. I wanted to go and find something to eat because my dad was feeling sick and there was nobody to go to the store. So I grabbed my black hoodie and put it on. I put my hair to the side and pulled my hood on. I grab my keys and phone and walk to the door.

"Dad! I'm going out. I'll be back soon." I call

"Okay..." I hear him grumble from his room.

I head out the door and walk out into the hot sun.

"Jeez. ever since the ice caps melted it's been so hot here." I grumble to myself. I wished I didn't need my jacket but I needed the hood to hide my face so the cops don't see me. I went into the grocery store and picked up a breakfast bar for breakfast. I pay quickly and eat it on my way out.

When I finish, I couldn't find a trash can so I out the wrapper in my pocket and keep walking. It must have fallen out because all of a sudden, a trash cop comes up with a breakfast bar wrapper and taps my shoulder.

"Crap." I mutter under my breath as I turn around. My hand falls onto my gun ready to pull it out and fight him.

Austin's perspective

I wake up and get into my uniform for work. Another day of walking along the streets looking for trash. I get to work and sign in.

When I get to protroling, I walk along the streets looking at everything. All of a sudden, I see the girl ahead of me drop something out of her pocket. I pick it up and catch up to her. I tap her shoulder ready to arrest her. But when she turns around, I see a beautiful girl with the brightest red hair I had ever seen. She turns around and mutters something I can't quite hear. Her hand falls to her hip with a terrified look on her face.

"I think you dropped this." I say holding it out to her.

"Oh... You won't arrest me will you?" She asks nervously.

"I can let you off with a warning this time. But it won't be so easy next time." I say.

"How old are you? You look really young to be a cop." She says skeptically.

"18." I admit

"Same. How did you get this job?" She asks

"A lot of begging." I say. She laughs.

All of a sudden, we hear the sounds of a helicopter flying above us.

"Well shit. They probably found me." She says

"What?" I ask

"My dad is Justin Monocay" she says. Suddenly, it clicks. Her hood, black clothes, why she was scared of me, the red hair. It was because her dad was the reason. The cops are after him. Therefore she needs to hide too.

"RUN!" She screams
