"Origami?" I asked, softly caressing her wings.
I looked up at the other two humans, "What happened?"
"She - she said she could fix you; make you human again," Zachary stuttered.
"There was this scribbley light," Pamela said from her standing position. She had her arms crossed weakly, "and I think it used a lot of her energy to get it to - work on you."
Scribbley light... I though back to that moment in the kitchen. That time when Hope had drawn the 'magic' around her butterfly. I thought about when I had first met Origami, how she had expelled this glow around her.
I remained silent and stared intently at the golden butterfly resting in my hand, hoping that at some moment she would suddenly wake up. I looked around and realized we had actually taken refuge in one of the houses, and zherti were banging at the walls. I couldn't see the door.
"Wait - where's Mr White?" I asked after a while. As if on cue, the large man came ambling into the room.
"They should be held off for now," he said, still looking back at the area he had come from, "How're the little sleepin' ladies doin'?" He then turned his head towards us, seeing me awake on the chair on which I rested, "Oh, I see," He walked up to me and placed his hand on my forehead, "You okay?"
I carefully raised myself, ensuring that Origami was still protected within my palm. He removed his hand. "I'm fine," I answered, "I'm more concerned for her," I motioned to the butterfly sitting in my hand.
"She'll recover," he stated briefly, "Just give her time to rest. We have to get to the core."
"But what about the zherti?" I asked frantically.
"Put 'er in a box or something; they're too dumb to open one. Trust me, I have experience with those things." I had no choice but to do as he said.
I sighed and tenderly carried Origami to a shelf on which there was a small jewelry box. I took out the jewelry and replaced it gently with the little golden butterfly that had guided me through my entire journey. The one who showed me the sword, who lead me through the zherti.
I closed the lid firmly and secured the latch. I then ran off to get a piece of fluff from one of the torn pillows and placed that in there with her, just in case.
I took the sword from Zachary and wiped a tear I had shed when placing Origami in the box. Pamela nodded at me, and I pushed my sword into the air, "Let's go! For Origami!"
The kids and I shoved through the door, running out to fight the monsters, with Mr White right behind us.
I never saw the golden butterfly after that. But I will always remember Origami.
