Chapter Nineteen: Late Night Visitors
I guess I should have checked the time we landed before I invited everyone over because it's already five and we're just now getting here. Everyone has been waiting out front.
Mom sits up when we pull into the driveway.
"This is your house?" She asks, shocked.
"That's what I said when I first saw it." Dad mutters.
Caleb stops the car and I unbuckle my seatbelt.
Home sweet home.
I unbuckle Ethan from his car seat and get out. Emily and Micah clamber after me, and Micah goes running to Kyle and Miley.
I set Ethan down and just look at the house. It's so perfect.
Everyone is waiting in the yard so I walk over to them.
They all look a little hesitant of my Mom, which I don't blame them.
I punch the code in for the garage door.
"Why did you guys wait outside?" I wonder.
The garage door doesn't move when I type in the code.
"That's why." Kyle says. "Did you guys change the code?"
"No." I frown, pulling the keys from my purse. I unlock the garage door and it pushes open. "Why didn't you use your keys?" I ask.
"Oh, I lost mine." Megan says.
"Same." Miley shrugs.
"Yeah, I got mad at you and threw it in the trash." Abby says.
Big surprise there.
I just nod and walk into the house, flipping on switches as I go. I pause at the control for the garage door machine and see it's disabled.
"Did you shut this off?" I ask Danny.
He nods, reaching above my head to turn it back on.
Everyone follows me upstairs and I feel warmth in my body being back home.
The sunlight is streaming in through the giant windows.
"Wow." Mom says. "This is beautiful. How long have you lived here?"
"Uh...five years, I think." I nod. "Five and a half?"
"And you guys built this?"
"Well we had it built." Danny sets his keys on the counter. "But Grace designed it."
She looks impressed.
I look around the living room. "Where's Ethan?"
