Sir Roiben
Lord of the Court of TermitesI sigh. Another letter. Another issue for me to deal with. Since I've been bestowed the role of seneschal, my desk here at the palace has never been clear of rolls of paper, lords and rulers requesting a problem to be solved or a meeting with their king, or more like me, who always tends to be sent in his place.
Just as I pose my hand to write a reply to Sir Roiben, a knock startles me.
"Enter." I say, confused. It's just a few hours before midnight, who would be seeking me out at this hour?
An imp sets foot in my office, holding an elegant urn.
"I beg your pardon Miss, but where shall I put this vase of flowers?" says the imp, his voice both shrill and guttural at the same time.
"What's it for?" I reply instead, a frown pinching my eyebrows and a sense of dread settles at the pit of my stomach.
A look of surprise crosses over the servant's face. "Why, tomorrow's ball, what else?"
A fit of irritation fills me, and I hold myself from screaming. Since Cardan's crowning, he's done nothing other than host ball after ball, dancing his nights away, and drowning himself in wine, although he seems more than capable to cover up his intoxication in front of his subjects.
I try to force a smile on my face for the imp's sake. I can almost hear what the rumours would sound like, that the seneschal herself is unaware of what's happening within the palace.
"Of course. Forgive me. I will come to assist you in a minute."
The imp smiles back, showing his gratitude. I must admit, as luck would have it, I've been well liked within the palace staff, and I plan on it remaining that way. They tend to do their chores better.
The imp takes his leave, and I heave back in my chair, taking a moment to ease off, before standing up and making my way to the throne room.
It's high time for a talk with that king.
I burst into the throne room without knocking. Not that I'm required to, I am the seneschal, the second most powerful title, right below the king. Although now that I have all this power, I sometimes wish I could go back to being the old me, before all this happened.
"Cardan, I know that you're still unhappy with what I did months ago, and I don't blame you. I would be too if I were in your place. But your parties have gone too.."
I freeze mid-stride, taking notice that we're not alone.
Sitting on the king's lap is a young Faerie, Cardan's face buried in the crook of her neck. When he hears me, he slowly raises it, as if he has all the time in the world.
"Yes, seneschal?" He says, his voice huskier than usual, and his eyes darker, a small smile playing on his lips.
I focus on his perfectly sculpted face, and will my eyes not to stray downward, towards his tanned chest peaking through that unbuttoned shirt of his.
"No, don't mind me. I'll just come by later when you aren't busy." I reply, fighting to keep the smile on my face and not show my uneasiness.
"Say what you have to say, Jude. Lilly here is no stranger." He drawls, sliding his hand up the girl's thighs, and she giggles, skimming her own down his chest.
I clench my jaw, not interested in watching where this is going. Cardan seems to notice my discomfort as he smirks, not breaking eye contact with me as he moves his hand higher, so that it's fully under the girl's skirts.
"I wanted to tell you, with all due respect, that the balls we've been hosting lately have been a great many, when there are much more pressing matters in the kingdom to take care of." I managed to say, wanting to escape this position as soon as I can, blocking out the girl's infuriating moans.
"I believe we've talked about this before Jude, haven't we?" He inquires raising a dark eyebrow, but not stopping his intimate assault on the squirming faerie.
I know he's doing this in front of me to rile me up, to prove to me that his confession from weeks ago no longer holds, the kiss we shared a thing of the past. And damn the bastard, a part of me is hurt it's that insignificant to him.
"I know what I did is unforgivable, but you can't possibly—"
"The case is closed. You did what you did, Jude. Learn to live with the consequences of your actions."
I ground my teeth as he dismisses me, and returns his attention on the girl clinging to his neck and writhing under his touch.
I storm out the room, making sure to slam the great mahogany doors. My cloak bellows behind me as I stride down the hallway, thinking of when in the seas my life went so wrong.
Ok.
So.
Firstly I have to say I'm sorry it's been two weeks since I last uploaded a chapter, and I really don't have a reason for that other than I haven't been feeling motivated.
Secondly, which is related to the first: do you guys want me to continue with these one-shots? I'm really torn, I haven't been getting that much of a response and I think I'm going to leave this book. What do you guys think? Are you interested in more, or is it not worth it? I actually do have many ideas but it would be fruitless to spend time every week writing and no one is interested in reading my work, you know?
So yeah. Ok, I'll leave now.
