The river became the source of my release. I tried to concentrate as I thrust the water upwards. I growled in frustration as Reyna's words came back to me.
Who has the power of Olympus?
The water splashed to the earth as I lost my focus. Again. I slid to my knees and closed my eyes. I couldn't lose this. I couldn't give up so easily. Because Jules' life depended on it.
"Having fun?" I spring to my feet and whirl around as the voice startles me. Standing before me are two boys, neither of whom I recognize. The one that spoke has blond hair. I notice a long bandage covers his face from his jaw to his ear. The boy standing next to him had brown hair. His eyes are wary, scanning me and the surrounding landscape.
"Tons." The sarcasm drips from the word.
The brown haired one chuckles. "I like her."
The blond one rolls his eyes. "You like everyone that knows how to use sarcasm."
"Not true." The brown one feigns hurt. "I like everyone who uses sarcasm on you."
"Can I help you?" My anger boils upward again and I fight to push it down.
The blond one speaks as the brown one fights a smile. "We heard you're trying to help Jules."
"And what concern is it of yours?" I raise an eyebrow.
"We'd like to help." The brown one finally wipes his smile away.
"Why?"
The joking air around them disappears. "He helped us. And..." the blond one hesitates "...he saved our lives."
I turn my back to them and close my eyes. It didn't surprise me that Jules had found a way to save them. He had always been that way. Sacrificing himself for anyone. That was the difference between him and I.
He would give his life for anyone.
I would wait for someone else to step up.
"Jay?"
I turn back around, surprised to find that my eyes are blurry. I quickly blink away the tears. "What are your names?"
The blond haired one speaks first. "Pax."
"Aidin."
"Well Pax and Aidin, how far are you willing to go to save him?"
Pax answers first again. "He saved my life. I owe him to at least try anything."
I nod and turn to Aidin. "Well...you know... as long as it's not death? Death isn't good."
Pax sighs and I shake my head. "Is he always like this?"
"Unfortunately, yes." Pax receives a light punch in the shoulder after his answer.
"I'm not that bad." Aidin grins. I notice his eyes go back to scanning the landscape again.
"Tomorrow. Here. Dark." I turned back to the water, not caring if they stayed or left. The water began to shape itself again as I focused on it.
I had help. That was all I really needed.
