Against Bodhi, Jyn, and Cassian's wishes, the small group of rebels were headed back to the satellite rebel base on Crait. Cassian and Bodhi both knew what awaited them when they returned to being under Rebellion authority. On the ship, it was oddly quiet. No one spoke much. Jyn found out that Alderaan had been destroyed at the same time she felt the crushing feeling in the cell, which left her puzzled and deep in thought. Every member on board was grieving in one way or another. Luke was mourning the loss of his mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi; Leia was mourning her planet and people; Jyn, Cassian, and Bodhi were all mourning the loss of their comrades on Scarif. Jyn had wandered off somewhere, and Cassian was beginning to worry. Bodhi glanced over at Cassian every now and then, a wordless concern over Jyn being exchanged.
Finally, Cassian got to his feet and wandered the ship, looking for Jyn. He paused in the hallway when he heard a sniffling in a dark corner. He crouched and peered into the shadows.
"Jyn?" He called softly. A pair of green eyes suddenly caught the light. Jyn stood up, hastily wiping away tears.
"I was... I..." She fumbled weakly for an explanation. Cassian suddenly moved forward against his own will and wrapped his arms around her. A shiver seemed to pass between Cassian and Jyn; Jyn gasped slightly, but she didn't resist. They sank to the floor together, tears from both faces mingling freely, both mourning silently. Cassian gripped her tighter, overwhelmed by the emotions that swirled inside him. He wanted to ease Jyn's grief, but he had never been able to ease his own over the years, so he simply left himself open to her. It made him feel vulnerable; he'd never allowed himself to be open with emotions to anyone, but with Jyn it just felt right.
"I've never been able to just cry before. Thank you." Jyn whispered in Cassian's ear, the words barely audible.
"I'm not going to leave you like everyone else did, Jyn. You're not going to lose me." Cassian whispered back, holding her tightly as she buried her face in his shoulder. Jyn's heart felt as if it was going to shatter. It had been so long since someone held her and let her cry. Little did Cassian know, his promise to Jyn would soon be broken.
