Selene:"I mean God, Selene. Could it really have been so bad?"
Jenna murmured as we stalked to a clearing.
"Well Jenna- it's not easy being like that. He really wanted to help and we could use some with this."
She sneered as she rolled her eyes at the stars.
"Whatever. He's not coming either way- so I'm not going to bicker like this. What time is it?"
I glanced at her. I didn't have a watch. Or a phone for that matter.
"Don't you have a watch?"
Jenna pursed her buxom lips. She lifted her wrist and cast a sideways glance at her tawdry watch.
"It's only 10:15"
I nodded my head once. I noticed we were in the middle of the clearing.
"Here is probably good."
Jenna said a blatant "Yeah," in agreement. But I noticed her stiffen. I tucked my wings in, the mass of flesh heavier than normal. So odd having entirely new appendages. Without moving my head I looked upwards. I saw nothing; but heard the whiz of wind. Quiet as a whisper.
I put a finger to my lips, a silent command to stay low. Jenna did as much. As I lowered the finger from my lips I felt a drop of rain hit my forehead. Forgetting the rule to stay quiet; I snapped my head up to scan the sky. There, I saw a dark shape shooting across the sky below the clouds. My lip curled. I touched the wet spot on my forehead and brought my finger to my nose. Blood.
Jenna was looking at me now, wondering what i'd do.
"It might have been Reese. I'm gonna check the house."
Before she could retort, I started running in the direction of the house. I jutted my wings out and caught a gust of wind. Soon I was gliding as fast as a hawk. The house wasn't far. I stumbled as I landed. I was flying too low. I pushed up from the ground, my palms biting into the dirt, and walked to the front door. I flung it open and immediately started rummaging through the house.
Every room was empty. I'm almost positive that was Reese in the sky. He must have had to leave right after we did. We'd been gone for only about ten minutes.
I walked out into the living room and went towards the front door. Then I heard a noise. I whipped my head around to find Reese standing in the kitchen- back to me.
"Hey."
He jumped at the word and turned to me.
I eyed him head to toe. He was shirtless- his grey shorts flecked with blood. His chest was covered in it, and his fingernails had redness caked underneath. He was grasping a pair of gloves in one hand and car keys in the other.
"What did you kill?"
He opened his mouth then shut it- as if he were thinking about what he'd have to say.
"It was a deer-"
I snarled and spit out,
"Do not lie to me."
Reese closed his eyes and clenched his jaw, obviously annoyed. Perhaps a little ashamed.
"I killed a cow."
I put a look of disgust on my face and it wasn't entirely fake.
"Really? Were you that hungry? For God's sake Reese, we have enough blood in the fridge- How is this going to go over unnoticed?"
His eyes were wide open now.
"Well I was pissed off! I needed to release some of that anger or I probably would've turned the house to splinters!"
Blithering idiot.
"Well; you need to learn how to fucking control that or we're going to have a load of problems to deal with. "
Reese pursed his lips. He turned back around to get a paper towel. I watched him as he ran it under the faucet and dampened it. Then began wiping his chest. I stayed until he was finished. He shoved those black gloves on and snatched the car keys from the counter top. I could hear them jangling as he walked to the front door, brushing past me. When he got to the door, I didn't fight the flinch as he slammed it behind him.
Walking to the door, I turned to see the bloody paper towel lying on the counter. I tore my gaze from it and started doing a sweep of the house, checking for signs of anything that might give us away. Everything was normal in the main room and bedroom, but I stopped in the kitchen. I stalked to the counters, pinching the end of the soaked paper towel and dropping it into the sink drain. I turned the faucet until a forceful stream of water came down. Then I flicked the switch for the garbage disposal. There was a loud racket from the sink, then a low hum. I turned it off and glanced at the fridge. I could smell the tinge of blood radiating from it. Pulling the door of the fridge open- I saw each bag sitting on the rack. What were we going to do with all of these? I tapped my finger on the handle, then with one hand I grabbed the remaining three bags.
Making sure all of the lights were out, I finally left the house.
I half ran to where Jenna was sitting on the ground, wings drooping. When she heard my steps, she looked at her watch.
"10:28, let's hurry."
She sprung from her position, wings out and aching for flight. I know that feeling because I felt the same.
"What are we going to do with the rest of this?"
Jenna scowled at the bags in my arms. She held a hand out, beckoning. I obliged. With the bloodbag still in her hands she used her very front teeth to tear a small hole in the plastic. Through her effort, she managed to let some blood drip onto her shirt, though it was black. I smiled at the Green Day insignia on the front, digging up memories again. We were running out of time. I did the same with the bag still in my hand, then let the cold blood run through my system. Jenna held out another hand. I raised my eyebrows but gave her the last one we had. She looked at it, then me, and rolled her eyes.
"The empty one. Save the other for your boy toy."
"Don't call him that."
I shot back.
"Whatever. I'm mad at him right now. Let's just go."
Not really knowing what to do with the full one I had, I still handed the empty one back to Jenna. She snatched it from me and put on a playful smile. I did the same if only to satiate her. She shoved both bags into the side of her pants and once again spread her glorious brown/black wings. I felt my deep grey
ones stretch behind me, as if they had a mind of their own.
