Narrator-
At 5:00 PM on the dot, Savannah logged off her computer and gathered her personal items, along with Grant's gift.
There was a second gift bag next to her desk which she also picked up.
Knocking on Nathan's door, Savannah entered the space.
Nathan was standing near the glass wall and gazing out onto the evening street below. Vehicular traffic was light. Pedestrian traffic growing as the evening birds flocked towards the eateries and social spaces for their mid-weekly frolics and escapades. The sun was slowly dying, and street lights now had their curtain call. The feathered friends which made the sunny heavens their home sung their farewell notes to the yellow star, as they returned to their respective nesting grounds.
"Please return these to your sister with my thanks. They've been washed and pressed." Savannah expressed while placing the bag, with Natalie's clothes on Nathan's desk.
Nathan hardly looked her way.
"Good night." Savannah said, then she turned to leave.
She was already working on building the courage to visit her comatose grandmother that evening, and Nathan's actions barely swayed her.
"Pull another stunt like what you did today, and there will be consequences." Nathan expressed mutely.
Then he took a drink from his glass.
Savannah stopped. She stared at the door and debated on whether to leave without taking Nathan's bait. However her courage urged her to speak, and speak she did.
Savannah turned around and faced Nathan even though his back was to her.
"I warned you that I wouldn't be pushed around," Savannah began, "you pulled a cruel prank, and we're past the age of playing these immature games."
It was Nathan's turn to face Savannah.
"Are you lecturing me?" Nathan wondered.
"I'm just making it known that I won't be bullied by you Mr. Court. I just won't." Savannah shrugged.
"You calling me immature?" Nathan then posed, while walking to his desk and placing the glass down.
He proceeded to roll up his sleeves to display his hairy yet strong forearms.
"Stop trying to put words in my mouth." Savannah scolded.
"Stop acting as if you've outgrown me." Nathan then counterargued.
Savannah blinked, "but I have."
"That so?" Nathan tested.
"Yes it is." Savannah confirmed.
"Never pegged you for a liar." Nathan expressed.
"Never pegged you for someone with such a sensitive ego." Savannah bit back without hostility or a change in volume.
Nathan chuckled.
"Think you can take a bite at my ego?" He wondered.
"I think that you believe your ego defines you. Hence if it's bruised, or even faintly threatened, to you its an act of war." Savannah determined while raising her chin just slightly in confidence of her enunciation.
"I think you might have your wires twisted." Nathan pointed, his face growing as dark as the sky above the building.
"Then I guess this conversation is over." Savannah shrugged, then prepared to leave.
"It's over when I say it's over." Nathan exclaimed with an authoritative voice.
"Nathan, just stop." Savannah turned to face him once again.
