November 10th, 1966
Julia finally told me what happened when Sister Mary dragged her away from the fence. She said she was just trying to talk to her brother. She wanted to tell him that she hadn’t forgotten about him and that she was angry he never tried to talk to her, or even wave back. She said Sister Mary dragged her into one of the classrooms and yelled at her, screaming until she gave Julia a headache.
After that, Julia lifted up her shirt and showed me the bruises. She was covered in different shades of black, blue and purple. She said it hurt to breathe too deeply and that she knew better now. She said that she regrets doing what she did, and she hopes that her brother stays away and didn’t listen to her. She didn’t want him to get hurt.
I could even begin to think about how I would feel if that had happened to Daniel. He may be older than me by a few years, but I loved him so much and any thought of him being hurt like that… It hurt too much to think about. I can only hope that Daniel is listening, that he isn’t getting
