I have returned. Hello my children. Have a drabble.
Dexter stood at the edge of the cliff, the wind freezing and working down under the back of his shirt, seeping through his skin. He shivered, crossing his arms over his chest.
He came out here to think. Think of Valkyrie, think of what could happen to the both of them if she caught feelings.
What Skulduggery would do to him if he hurt Valkyrie in any way shape or form.
"Vex?" Her voice was tentative, hesitant as she touched his shoulder. "You okay?"
He didn't move. Didn't reply to her, continued to stare out at the churning ocean, unrulled and free, much like him himself.
"I hope you don't judge me." He finally said, turning to face her.
She frowned at him, "judge you for what?"
"For not getting with you."
She laughed, "I know what I got myself into, Dexter."
He nodded. "Good. Because when this is all finished, I'm going to want to be alone. I don't want to be with you."
She took a step back. Opened her mouth. Closed it again. "What's the matter?" She said eventually.
"Nothing. I just don't want the effort of a relationship. You won't find what you're looking for in me."
She scowl, that anger that she had honed into dangerous ice over the years under Skulduggery's train. "And what exactly am I looking for, hmm?"
"You're judging me." He said quietly. "I'm just letting you know where we stand. At least I didn't lead you on."
She crossed her arms over her chest, "you're an asshole." Then she was turning away from him, getting in her car and driving away.
He turned back to the ocean. He was alone.
Just like her preferred to be.
It's short but eh oh well
