There she sat, right in front of me. I never thought we would actually meet face to face, especially like this.

"Hold on, weren't you living in Germany as of two weeks ago?" I asked.

"Yeah, but things happened and I came here," she said with a fake smile, but I didn't ask about it. "So, I see you escaped!"

"Oh, yes! Exactly a week ago, I packed my bags and carried Juli and Talia away with me. I haven't seen a trace of her since," I half-lied.

"Thank God you did!" She stood up and hugged me.

"I would love to stay and chat, but I have got to serve tables," I told her sadly.

"I can wait for you." She pulled out her phone. "I'll just play on my phone while I wait."

"That's nice of you to do, but I have a long shift."

She shurgged. "I don't care. It's not like I have anything to do for the rest of the day."

"Thank you." I rushed off into the kitchen and continued working.

After my four hour shift was over, and the place was emptied out of everyone except her and one other person, I saw Victoria still sitting at her table, staring out the window. I could tell that something was off about her.

"Jeez, you work a short shift," she told me when I walked over to her table and sat, having changed back into my school uniform and wig. "And what's with the boy's school uniform and wig. You cross-dressing or something?"

I laughed. "No! I signed up at this school as a boy to hide myself from "her"."

"Oooh! That makes sense!" She pointed at me. "Very smart and very you!"

"Thank you, and how about you; why did you and your family decide to move to America on such short notice?" She seemed to flinch at the word family. "Victoria?"

Silence took over the conversation as her eyes widened and she frantically searched the room without moving her head as if to try and answer to me. "I... I k-killed them..." she finally whispered.

I froze. "What?"

"I... I had just gotten my driver's licence. I was taking my family to the market, and..." Tears started to form tracks down her face. "W-we got into a car crash. I tried to go in the turn lane, past another person. I guess I forgot to turn on my turn signal and... w-we collided. I tried to move back into my original lane, but I must have jerked the wheel too hard and we went into the ditch. I was thrown somehow from the vehicle, rolled down the rocky ditch and into the woods, along with the car that went ahead." I could barely make out what she was saying through hiccups. "Mom and dad died, Mia's in a coma, and I'm still here..."

She put her head in her hands and I walked over to her and hugged her. I couldn't believe all that had happened in that one week that we hadn't spoken. I was having the best time while she was suffering.

"But, why are you in America?" I asked.

I let go of her and she wiped her face harshly, and I noticed a bandage wrapped around her arm when her grey sweater sleeve came up a little. "I didn't have any family for me to live with in Germany, so I came to America to live with my Mom's brother and his family. I came out of the hospital yesterday with only bruises and cuts. They just wanted to make sure I wasn't beating myself up over it all."

She stood up from the table. "Uncle Liam is probably wondering where I am. I have to go." She started to walk away, but I grabbed her wrist.

"I'll walk you home," I told her sternly. I wasn't just about to let an old friend who experinced so much when I couldn't support her just walk away on me. "Please."

She sighed. "Fein." (German: Fine.)

I let go of her and we walked outside. She grabbed her bike and we started walking. I told her some about my new school, not how it was only for personifications or anything like that. I told her about some of my new friends and about my great escape and about the halloween party.

"Hey," Victoria said, "Halloween's in three days, and I have four cousins who want to go trick or treating, and you have Juli, so do you wanna go trick or treating with me to help with them all?"

"Sounds like a great idea!" I paused, remembering about Juli's condition. "But Juli's caught a fever."

"Oh, no! If you want, I could ask Aunt Darla if she could see her. She's a nurse."

"No, thanks!" I quickly said, "Juli's already seen a doctor, but thank you."

"'Kay." We stopped in front of her house. "Well, here's my stop."

"See ya on thursday?" I asked.

"But what about Julian?" she asked.

"I could ask a friend to take care of her. And, who knows. Maybe she will be healthy by then," I said with a shrug.

"Cool." She waved as I started to walk away. "See ya!"

"See you later!" I turned my back and started to run to the school, ten pm growing nearer by the second.
