Chapter 20... never thought I would make it this far...

Thank you for sticking with me so far! I'm sorry, but school has been really taking most of my time.

Thank you to everyone who has read this far. If you are reading this, I want you to tell me your thoughts on this book in the comments. I love all my commenters so much!

On with the chapter!

I was in for quiet a shock when I got back to my room. Bianca was sitting on my bed chatting with a very healthy-looking Juli.

Bianca laughed. Juli was very eager to finish her story. "And after that, Natsumi-" She looked up and me, Bianca following her gaze. "Mari!"

Juli hopped off the bed and tackled my legs. "What took you so long?!" she asked me like an over-protective mother. All color had returned to her face, and she wasn't sweating. I put my hand on her forehead. She felt fine.

"What's wrong?" Juli asked me. She looked concerned.

I snapped out of my thoughts and ruffled her hair. "Nothing. I was just surprised with how quickly you went from sick to well. Did they take good care of you?"

She looked confused. "I was never sick." What? "Bianca said I had been sick, too. I don't remember anything."

I looked over at Bianca, and she shrugged. "She woke up about... thirty minutes ago?" She turned on her phone. "Yeah."

"Were you with anyone else when she woke up?" I asked Bianca. She shook her head.

"Just me." Juli ran over to the bed and hopped up on to it. Talia jumped and scurried away to the window sill.

"I told her about one of my fanfics!" Juli yelled.

I held up my finger. "Keep your voice down, it's late."

She smiled. "Sorry." I sat on the bed next to Juli, and she immediately sat on my lap.

We started talking about different things, like me finding a library for us to go to and Juli's new fanfic. She really seemed like she had never been sick. Maybe I had overreacted before. I felt embarrassed.

"Oh!" I said after remembering my day. "Do you remember Victoria?"

Bianca looked lost, but Juli's eyes went wide. "Vivi and Meemee?!" I nodded and remembered Victoria's outburst.. I looked to the side. "Maria?"

"I'm sorry, Juli. Mia... she's in a coma."

Again, her eyes went wide. She, surprisingly, kept calm. One of the only things we could do to pass time when things were calm at home was read, which was why Juli's grammar was amazing for her age. There were mostly medical books in our house because Dan wanted to be a doctor when he grew u-

Wait.

What am I thinking? I thought. I'd only known him since he was grown up. He was my dad, our dad... right?

"...a? Maria?"

I had my hand against my forehead, and my breathing was uneven. "Are you okay?" Bianca asked.

I rested my hand on my leg, took a deep breath, and said, "Yeah, I'm fine."

"What happened to Mia?" Juli asked.

Oh yeah. "Victoria was driving, and they got in a wreck."

"How's Vivi? Mrs. Laymon and Mr. Laymon?"

"Victoria's, for the most part, okay. Mr. and Mrs. Layman... they didn't..." I couldn't get myself to finish my sentence. Although, it was obvious what I was going to say, and I could tell Juli knew by the look in her eyes. I continued, "Victoria came to America to live with her Uncle and Aunt. They also have kids. One is your age, I think."

"When can I see Victoria?" Juli asked. She looked determined, in a way.

"She actually invited us to go trick or treating together," I told her, "You ready for your first Halloween?"

"Yeah!" She ran for the door.

"Not now." She froze in mid-run, one leg kicked up behind her. "We have three days until Halloween."

She pouted. "Fine. I'm tired, anyway." She flopped on the bed, and Bianca and I laughed.

Those three days passed by quick, and before I knew it, it was Halloween and Juli and I were on our way to Victoria's house.

"I'm so excited!" "Merida" squealed.

"Me, too!" Things were looking up. Days were going by better since we got the school. Even though there had been some drama since we got there, I would have dealt with it any day if it meant we got away from being beaten day by day. We were smiling more. We were laughing more. We were crying less. I hoped for days like these to keep passing, with less drama, of course.

Although, that's all it was. Hope. It was slowly slipping away bit by bit, until...
