She had almost made it out of the tower when something grabbed her arm. She was about to scream again when a cold hand covered her mouth.
"Be quiet or they'll find us." a voice whispered from behind her.
Ella was confused, but mainly scared. She didn't know what to think, a floating book started whispering to her, then ripped to shreds, and now someone grabbed her, and was covering her mouth and told her to be quiet.
"Whatever you do, don't scream." the voice whispered, uncovering her mouth and cautiously letting go of her arm. That's reassuring, Ella thought sarcastically.
She quickly spun around. Ella didn't scream, because she didn't really know what to do.
"Connor?" she exclaimed, grabbing a book from the shelf to use as a shield.
"That's my name, why are you here anyway?" he asked.
"Why are you here, don't you and your stupid gang want to kill me or something?" she replied. Suddenly she realized that she was talking to someone, and not just someone, him.
"Okay, two things. One; I'm here because I heard a scream and well I decided to do something good for once, I don't really know why. And two; they don't want to kill you, they think you're special or something. They also think that I'm out pickpocketing or whatever stupid 16-year-olds do, so if we're too loud they might find us." Connor answered.
"And if they find us..." Ella asked nervously, taking a few steps back as Mina hid behind her legs.
"They'll kill me, and I don't even want to think about what they might do to you." Connor said, with a small hint of sadness and terror in his eyes, staring at the ground as if he had witnessed it happen before.
"But how do I know I can trust you?" Ella said, in a sassy tone, but she feared that he might hear the nervousness through it.
"Umm... I hadn't really thought about that, so I don't really know." Connor replied.
Ella seemed relieved, somehow that made it seem as if he wasn't going to hurt her. She couldn't fully trust him, but she stepped closer lowering the book.
"I'm sorry that they were looking for you, and the danger you were in. I'm also sorry that you're all alone, now that your friend is gone. So, anytime you want to talk to me, I'll be right here." Connor reassured her, hoping that maybe they could be friends.
"Okay" Ella said. She walked next to him and they sat down. They just waited, sitting in silence for about 10 minutes, for nothing to happen. Suddenly Ella couldn't take it anymore, and just started crying on his shoulder. This startled Connor, but soon a sad look went in his eyes, as he wrapped his arms around her. Ella started talking about what happened. About what the book said. About how she had finally met a friend, and then she had to leave. About how her only family that she had now was Mina, the cat. About how scared she was when she heard about how the gang wanted her. And Connor listened, he heard every single word she said and comforted her the whole time, and promised her that they would be safe together, as Ella cried herself to sleep that night on Connor's shoulder.
