Chapter 16

Fire

Even before your first breath
Your parents love you
Even till their last breath
They care for you

I came at Hec's place because I had a bad feeling, the same as when Gaia had disappeared. The whole way I hoped this time I was wrong, that everything was fine. I just felt that I should reach her house as soon as possible.
When I started coming closer to her place, the feeling got worse until I saw her house going on fire. My breath got stuck in my throat.
Oh God.
I got out of the car and ran towards the house. I stopped a few feet away. This fire was not normal, it felt wrong. I tried to use my powers, tried to control the fire but I just couldn't connect with it.
What the..?
I decided to use water. There's water everywhere, in the bathroom, kitchen etc. So I use it, I try to put down the fire from the inside towards the outside. For a moment I think it had worked but after a few seconds the fire gets higher and higher.
I panic and can't stop the sobs.
Uncle and Aunty must be in there! Oh my God Hec..
I call Hec and she answers after a few rings.
"Cor"
"Hec.." I sob. How can I explain her what happened?
"Cor? What happened? Are you okay?"
"Hec..your parents...your house..on..on fire.." I can't even say it..
Silence. There is only silence on the other side.
Then Daemon takes the phone.
"What happened?"
"Daemon, Hec's house is ..on fire and Uncle and Aunty.." I sob again.
A few minutes pass and he answers "We'll be there in a sec."
A few moments later, he and Hec appear on my right.

"No.." Hec whispers, shaking her head.
She starts running towards the house and Daemon holds her back.
"Daemon let me go. My Mom, my Dad.." She says desperately trying to free herself.
"This fire is not a normal fire, Caty. It's a magical fire. Let me put it down first."
His eyes start glowing and with a gesture of his hand, the fire extinguishes.
As soon as Daemon loosens his hold on her, Hec runs towards the house.
We both follow her inside.
There is the smell of burnt and what I think is blood, inside.
Hec is looking around and shouting "Mom! Dad! Mom!.."
Then she notices something on the floor and brings a shaking hand on her mouth.
There's blood on the floor. A lot of blood.
Oh God
Hec goes in each and every room frantically, looking for her parents. When she finds nothing, she falls on her knees.
"It's my fault.." she whispers
"Caty.."
"It's my fault, Daemon" she shouts "that Skiihhiirr had told me that someone else will come after me and I'm sure they came here to kill me, but they found my parents instead. It's my fault. My fault. I killed my parents." She throws a lamp on the ground and keeps crying. She's shaking so badly, I think she isn't even breathing.
"I should have warned them. It's all my fault. I should have stayed home. I should have protected them somehow."
I've never seen her so angry and devastated. For a second I think I see her eyes glowing, but then it's gone. I check again but her eyes are normal, like always. I'm sure it was just my imagination.
Daemon goes towards her and pulls her into his arms. She fights back at first "Stay away from me, Daemon. Stay away." but then she falls like a sack of potatoes "I lost them too Daemon. My parents.. I can't..I.."
Her eyes are glassy and without any focus, as if she isn't there among us anymore.
"Caty..I'm sorry for this but I have to.."
She looks at him then, without understanding and he puts a hand on her forehead. A blue light surrounds Hec's head and then she slowly closes her eyes.
Daemon takes her into his arms and turns towards me "I'm going to take her to my place. She would have hurt herself or worse if I hadn't done it"
I nod, not able to see my friend in this condition. "I'm going to gather all the things that weren't badly burnt by the fire. I don't want her to lose everything. I'll meet you at your place then."
He nods and disappears.
First Gaia and now her parents..Oh God what was happening?

I get to Daemon's place and he helps me bring all Hec's things inside. Then we go in the bedroom and see Hec lying there.
"How long is she going to stay asleep?"
"She'll wake up in a few minutes.."
"She can't take it. Already she has lost Gaia, now she can't lose her parents too."
"I know.. for the first time in my life I feel helpless. I want to take her pain away from her but there are some things you can't make right with your powers."
"I know.. my powers had been useless. What do I need these powers for if I can't even save my best friend's parents from a fire?"
"It wasn't a normal fire. Whoever did this was powerful."
Hec starts moving and we both go towards the bed. A few seconds later she opens her eyes and looks around till she focuses on our faces.
"They're alive." She says smiling.
