Middiran
Looks can deceive
Who knows if what you believe
Is real and true
Or just some illusion you once knewAfter a few weeks of training, my morale gets lower and lower. After that first success with the time-wave, we had tried to control the space. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out so well. I couldn't see any doors or curtains or whatever. The only world I saw was Earth no matter how much I tried to 'feel' or 'see' differently.
If it weren't for Daemon's kisses (the only good part of this week), I'm sure I would have gone insane. Cor, on the other hand, has made a lot of progress. She can control Earth and Water now, said they were the simpler ones. Air and Fire were still a bit out of reach. She could even do more spells now, as she was always learning them in her free-time. We almost never saw each other as we were always busy with our trainings. We only called each other for updates every night.
"Daemon, it's not working. I'm sick of it."
I sigh and look at Daemon.
We're in that abandoned factory again and I've been trying to bend space for 30 minutes. Useless to say, it didn't work.
"Caty, I don't know how it works. I think it should come natural to you, somehow."
He sits up straighter "Wait, maybe the problem is that you don't know anything about these worlds. Maybe by knowing more, it'll be easier for you to find them. When I teleport myself from one place to another, I have to know where I'm going or else it doesn't work."
"Uh..alright let's try it. Tell me about a world."
"Do you know the story of Snow white and the seven dwarfs?"
"Of course I do"
"Did you know that Snow White was actually a Traveller who went into Middiran, a world where Middiers live. They have been called 'dwarfs' by humans. She was the first Traveller to ever go into that world and do you remember how I told you that one world influences the other? Well, that's how this story was born."
Oh, well. Even the bed-time stories from my childhood had been a lie.
"How are these Middiers?"
"They are sweet and welcoming creatures. I went there once and they treated me really well. The tallest one reached my waist, I guess."
"Wow, I think I would love to meet them."
"You would. I'm sure they'll be happy too."
"Okay, let's give it a try."
I thought about this world, Middiran and the Middiers living there. I imagined they were just on the other side of the 'wall' between the worlds. I feel my fingers tingly for a second, but the feeling vanishes a few moments later. I sigh frustrated. I won't be able to do anything if I go on like this. I've already wasted a week, I have to learn to do this freaking space thing. I can't just wait for it to happen, there's no time.
The tingly feeling comes back and I focus with everything I have. I think about Gaia, her energy getting weaker everyday. I imagine her hurt somewhere waiting for her family to save her. This thought moves something in me. I feel the tingly feeling spread from my fingers to my arms.
All my grief, anger and desperation. I use them all. Everything for this one thing. I shout with all the strength I have.
"OPEN" I imagine tearing the space in front of me open with both my hands and just open. The air between my hands shimmer and I push with more strength. A hole opens up and it spreads. On the other side there is another place. There's something that looks like a wooden hut and seems like it's night time there. I hear footsteps and then a small creature appears. My breath gets stuck in my throat. The creature, what I imagine a dwarf looks like, is so adorable I want to go on the other side and coddle him.
The creature looks around as if sensing someone's presence. Finally he notices me and his expression gets serious.
That expression doesn't suit him, he looks too cute and adorable to look that serious.
He takes an arrow from his back and aims it at me.
He's not going to really shoot it, is he? He looks like a teddy bear. How can he even think of hurting someone?
Just as I finish this thought he lets go the arrow and it comes straight towards me. I'm so shocked, I step back and lose all my focus. The hole closes just as the arrow is about to reach this side.
"Weren't they supposed to be sweet and welcoming?"
Looks deceive after all.
Daemon looks at me with his mouth open.
Then he smiles and hugs me tight, moving us both in a circle.
"You did it, Caty."
The arrow-thing had been so freaking I hadn't thought about it but hell, I had done it.
"I did it, Daemon. I actually fucking did it."
I hug him back and we both stay there laughing in each other's arms.
I get back enough to look at him
"Why did the Middier react like this? He was so adorable, I still can't believe he actually did it."
"These are rough days, Caty. I'm sure the portals have opened in their world too and some not too friendly creatures have come and ruined the peaceful lifestyle they had."
"We have to stop it, Daemon. I don't want these creatures to live like this. The Middier looked too innocent and sweet to be holding an arrow."
"We'll stop it, Caty. Now you are able to use some of your abilities. We'll resettle the balance."
"Daemon, do you think we can go to His world now?" I ask after a moment's hesitation.
"I don't know Caty, maybe. I don't think you're completely ready yet."
"I'm never going to be completely ready. I just want to go there as soon as possible and save Gaia."
"Caty.."
My phone rings and it's Cor.
"Wait a sec." I say looking at Daemon.
"Cor"
"Hec.." She says with a sob.
"Cor? What happened? Are you okay?"
"Hec..your parents...your house..on..on fire.."
I feel numb. No.No.No. Not my parents.
Please, no.
I don't answer, just go on staring at nothing. Daemon looks at me worried and takes the phone from my hand.
After a few seconds his eyes widen and he says "We'll be there in a sec"
He turns towards me. "Caty.."
His voice takes me out of my shock.
I need to go home. Now.
I start running towards the door but Daemon stops me. "Wait, I'll take you there."
We get there in a few seconds, but they feel longer than hours.
Now we're standing in front of my house. And it's going on fire.
