In the midst of despair, just know there's someone you can lean on

[Alex's POV]

It's been two days since I walked out of my dad's office. That night I packed my bags and called on my phone one last time before my father totally cuts me off.

I have already bought a ticket to Chicago behind my father's back. I will be staying at my Aunt Renee's bar downtown. She's my mother's younger sister, and was also aspiring to be a band manager before my mother died seven years ago. I kept in touch with her, but not in front of my dad as he blamed Aunt Renee for inviting her to a tour she was organizing that led to the accident that killed her.

I knew that my mom and Aunt Renee were very close. I guess that's why when I told her I would run away from my dad, she agreed to hide me from him. The only thing was that I need to work as a waiter at the bar she now owns called Swigaroo.

After picking me up from the airport, we drove across town to her bar where I'll be staying. I cannot live with her because it will be too easy for dad to find out where I was. So she suggested I stay at her bar since my dad doesn't know she opened one very recently.

"While you stay here honey, we need to give you a new name. We also need to change your look a lil' bit just in case you father tries to claw his way here in Chicago...", Aunt Renee suggested as we pulled into the back of the building.

"A new name? Aunt Renee that'll be too much! Besides, my name is very common anyways..." I said to her as we were walking across the street, going over some of the plans we had made in order to hide myself from Dad.

After walking a few block we've arrived at a salon, owned by one of Aunt Renee's friends. She thought it will be a good idea to change my look just in case.

My hairdresser, Juanito, was all sparkly eyes the moment he realized that I was sitting at his booth waiting for him to do his thing. That's when Aunt Renee talked to him before we started.

"Hey Juanito. Give my gorgeous nephew a new hairstyle, will you? Also, if anyone knows he was here, I will cut your balls and feed 'em to you, capiche?" She said giving poor Juanito a death glare.

"No problemo Seniora! Your secret's safe with me!" Says Juanito. He then approached my seat and contemplated on what hairstyle to do.

Currently, I am sporting quite a volume of hair that was combed upwards. Juanito decided I should lose all that hair and go for a  short, yet sleek hairstyle.

Almost an hour later, we were done. I now look like my age with my current hairstyle. How I wished I had Juanito as my stylist way back. I really liked my new look.

"Woah, Alex honey! You look even younger! Now, let's get over that blonde hair of yours. I really don't like it."

"But Aunt Renee, don't you think that's a little too much?"

"Shush honey. Juanito, give this beautiful angel's hair a vibrant burgundy, pronto!" She then shouts at Juanito who was apprently already preparing to dye my hair. He then waltzes back in and starts to dye my hair a deep burgundy red.

Another hour later, after all that coloring, I nervously walked to Aunt Renee...

"Wow! Alex honey look at you! You look more like your mother now! I really wish she could see this! I knew that color will suit well!" She exclaimed as I looked at myself in the mirror. And oh geez, she was not exaggerating! I really look like my mother now!

"To finish the look, I bought you a pair of glasses, and a pair of contacts. Don't worry honey, you only need to wear them when you're at work. The contacts will hide your blue eyes. The glasses, I dunno, thought you may like wearing them..."

She hands me the glasses and the contacts. The contacts have a shade of brown on them, to cover my blue eyes. I also think the glasses are also a good means of hiding myself. They're squared and quite simple.

I took the contacts and looked at myself. I realized how I can turn into someone else. Somehow it made me think if this decision I made will truly make me feel free. How I can be free it I need to hide like this?

After the makeover, Aunt Renee brought me back to the bar where I will be working at. She said I will be living on the floor just upstairs from the establishment, which she had cleared out in anticipation of my daring escape.

The apartment above the bar was decent enough. It seems she already bought some furniture like the comfy couch and the TV. The kitchen also looked a bit renovated.

"This place is great Aunt Renee! You even took effort getting it renovated. Thank you so much!" I gave my Aunt a big hug.

"Of course honey! Anything for you! Now, eventhough you will be living here alone, I will still be dropping by often. I don't want any boys lurking around this place or else, you hear me angel?"

She said jokingly while slapping my back. I just gave her an awkward laugh. Of course I don't want my Aunt to see me doing weird things here. Oh wait - I have not ever, I mean never,  done any of those things! I haven't even kissed anyone romantically!

"Aunt Renee! That was so not cool! You know I have not even dated anyone ever!"

"You know what they say, when you let the cat loose, it plays! Anyways, I just want you to know that no matter what, I'm here for you."

With that, I gave my aunt another huge hug. I'm really lucky to have her. Since Aunt Renee did not have any children nor had any luck with all three husbands she was married to in the past. She focused all her love to me, especially after my mother died. She promised that she will step in to support me like my mom did.

"Thank you, Aunt Renee..." Was all I can respond with.

"Oh shucks, no more mushy stuff. Go get settled. I'll see you tomorrow! We have a big opening and I need to make sure you get some rest. Okay sweetie?" Aunt Renee said as she stepped out of the apartment and left me to get my things settled.

It's quite hard to believe, but I feel very relieved I chose to go to Aunt Renee for help...

And now for some light unpacking...
