"Damon!" I shriek, my voice hoarse.
He slides to the ground, his back up against the wall. He lays still. Dead.
I start making these weird, animal, sobbing noises, and I tug at my temples. "Are you happy now?!" I yell at Markos. "Is your puppet show going as it should?!"
He raises his eyebrows and shrugs. "Go to Stefan for comfort, dearest."
I shake my head. "You really don't get it. Every single time someone died it was Damon who was there to hold me, and tell me that it will be okay. It was Damon who I fell in love with. I love Stefan, but I am in love with Damon. And killing him won't change a damn thing about how I feel about him." I take a step towards him. "But it changes greatly how I feel about you."
{Caroline's POV}
"Bonnie, did it work?" I ask her, standing outside of my dorm door.
She looks nervous and doesn't say anything.
I sigh. "For Elena's sake, I hope it does. She won't make it if Damon dies."
{Elena's POV}
I've been shaking and crying for over the past hour. Markos is long gone to god knows where. Maybe working on a spell to give me new artificial feelings for Stefan.
I hear jingling of keys from the other side of the door. Caroline and Bonnie rush inside the dorm frantically.
"Oh god Elena, calm down!" Caroline says to me, helping me stand. I stifle a new sob. "He's not dead." She says.
My eyes go wide, and I almost choke.
"But we had to have Markos think he was dead." Bonnie says.
Silvery hope shoots through my breakdown. "W-what?" I stutter, my breaths more even.
"Protection spell." Bonnie says informally. "It should work." She mumbles something to herself that I can't hear.
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. "Well," I say, looking back and fourth between my two friends. "What now?"
"We wait." Bonnie says firmly. Not an ounce of emotion has reached her expression since she's been here and I can't decide if that's a bad thing or not.
So I wait sitting in this room, for Damon to come back to me.
