CHASED
Prologue
Chandni's P.O.V
"I don't want her," the woman said, and then she pointed behind me, and I turned to look over my shoulder at the boy who sat behind me. The boy looked at the woman with a happy face while I sat back on my spot against the wall with a frown on my face.
Rejected. Once again.
After the woman and her husband had left, I let the pain kick in as I cried to my heart's content. It is the eleventh time I've been rejected by the parents. I was a helpless and hopeless child who had a sad destiny. Just at the age of three, my real parents threw me away to the orphanage, I was a mistake. I'm only six years old but the time has taught me that I'm a lonely child with no friends, no family, just no one to care for me. I am just one of the children who want to get accepted.
The night soon descended upon the Family Circle Orphanage, and right when the staff was done checking on the children, I got off my bed and hid under it, my usual spot where I always went to sleep.
To hide.
Hide from what? That mystery is walking around the hallways, monitoring for any suspicious activities. No one knows, not even myself, why the man at night comes into my room to watch me. To caress mine and few other children's faces during the night. The night he touched me left me shaken, so I started hiding under the bed.
However, tonight I wasn't fast enough.
The man caught me in action without my notice, and when it was completely silent, I heard his footsteps stop beside my bed and I sucked in a sharp breath. A tear slipped my eye when I saw his knees touching the ground and his hand pulling the covers of the bed from the floor. He looked at me with a glint to his eyes and a cheeky smile across his face. "So that's where you were hiding, no wonder. Come on, get out, I want to show you something!"
I shook my head as I circled my arms around my knees. "Go away!" I whispered.
"Come on, doll! I have something to show you, it is something really special!"
I shook my head again and closed my eyes. Right then I felt his hand on my small arm, pulling me from under the bed with ease and locking his hand around my mouth.

I woke up with a startle, sweat beading my forehead as I looked around blindly through my tears. I sobbed to myself, drawing my knees to my chest as events from my childhood invaded my mind once again.
"Chandni! Chandni, are you alright?" Megha asked me after turning the lamp light on, and I looked at her with a frown. As tears continued to roll down my cheeks, I wrapped my arms around Megha's waist.
"Why can't I forget it! The more I try, the more those memories create a place in my head. Why?" I sobbed louder as Megha tightened her grip on me with her sleepy eyes tearing up at my state. I hated sharing my sad past with people, but it was one of these times that I couldn't keep it in.
"Chandni, its all in the past now! Please, try to free your mind from all these chains!" Megha pleaded with me and then grabbed my head, wiping away my tears, and I too wiped my cheeks furiously, telling myself to suck it up. "How does hot steaming cup of coffee sound at ...3:14 a.m on the dot?" Megha asked suggestively, and I managed to smile.
"Sounds fantastic!" I grinned and followed Megha into the kitchen. After sitting down on the stool in front of the marble counter, I sprawled my arms on the counter as I watched Megha beating coffee, sugar, and some cream in a cup while the milk heated up in a silver pot on the stove.
