Chapter 22
"Mira! Wake your lazy butt up!" A deep voice who I distinguish as Luke, screeches in my ear.
I grab my pillow from under my head and put it over my face and groan loudly. Luke snatches the pillow off of me. "This is no way to treat your girlfriend," I tell him with a scowl; fake of course.
He barks in laughter. "Well, it's almost noon and the winner announcement is in an hour. I thought you would want to get dressed and eat something."
"Oh my goodness! You're right!" I throw the covers of myself and literally bump into Luke. He catches me and laughs once again.
"I'll leave you to your clumsiness and call or text me when your ready and well walk there together," he pecks my cheek longer than usual and begins to walk out of the room. Then he stops and says, "and wear something nice. Like jean shorts or something." And with a wink, he's off.
I jump in the shower quickly just to wake myself up and get out and blow dry my dripping hair. When I get back in the room, I pull out a pair of light wash shorts from Pacsun and a muscle tank with a white and yellow flower on it also from Pacsun. I pair it with white Converse and a side French braid.
I grab my phone and dial Luke's number. He picks up on the second ring. "Hello?"
"I'm ready," I tell him.
"Kay. I'll be there in two minutes."
"See you then," I say, then hang up.
Soon enough, a knock sounds at my door. I jump up from my bed and open the door to reveal Luke.
"Well you clean up nicely," he says with a playful smirk and a quick kiss on the cheek.
I shove his shoulder gently and put a hand over my heart as if his words actually hurt me. He chuckles and interlaces our fingers. "The announcement is in the dining hall. The girls signed up to help set up for it every year, so that's wear they are." He informs me.
"Okay. I was wondering where Savannah was."
We make useless chatter on the way to the winner announcement. When we get there, the place is almost already packed, but each coach has a section for their "team" to sit and we just happen to be in the front row. I sit in between Luke and Savannah.
"You look nice," Savannah compliments me with a wink.
"Right back at ya, babe," I say right back.
"Okay, I will fight you, Savannah. She's my girlfriend, not yours," Luke says, with a surprisingly straight face.
The three of us burst out laughing at Luke's remark. Then, an announcer comes on the stage holding a microphone.
"Thank you guys for coming to the camp this year. We had a really good turnout this year with a whole bunch of new people. And something happened this year that has never happened in previous years. There has been a tie for the competition regarding the scholarship."
Everyone gasps from around the room.
"Yes. Surprising, I know." I tune out the rest of his speech because I just want to hear who the winners are. That's all anyone really cares about anyway.
He drones on about statistics, former players, blah blah blah. "Okay. I think everyone is ready for me to announce the winners." Finally! "As I said before, there is a tie between one boy and one girl for the scholarship." Luke grabs a hold of my hand reassuringly and gives it a tight squeeze. I squeeze back as the announcer continues. "Okay, first, we have... Mira Barone for the ladyand Luke Anderson for the guy!"
