Ashes and Chaos and Feelings and You

High on smoke from ashes of you

I'll meet you where we began

And I'll try again

Even after telling myself

That I don't have anything left to give

Or anything left to be taken

I will welcome chaos with a smile

My familiar, fearless friend

That I chase wild geese with

Soaring high and never looking down

A flickering image on the retina of your eyes

The glimpse of a shadow next to you

When the sun goes down

A single motion

Whirling and swaying, heading out of sight

You've never been able to touch me

But I've always been in reach

The warm spot on the blanket

Where your disheveled head has rested

The sound leaving your mouth

When your voice refuses to speak

A pure tone along the white noise

That constantly fills up your ears

The dimension between your mind

And your beating heart

That you have not explored yet

And will remain untouched

Because you remain trapped in the echoes

Of past and present

Unwilling to leave either behind

And I am unwilling to leave you behind

You're the full moon that peeks

Through the haunted willow branches

Outside my house at midnight

Whispering secret notes

Of love between the bloody cracks

Of the broken glass in my window

In the form of starlight

It's the most beautiful way

Of calling you a nightmare

But you were also whimsical wonder

And I miss the time when magic lived in our eyes

When clouds could be whatever we wanted

We'd wonder about the morning dew

How it came and where it went

Why did the moon hide each day

And were the colors of the rainbow bent

But here's what you must remember

When everything was

Beautiful and new

That magic we envied in children's eyes

Was once, and still is, a part of you

So why can't we forgive the weed

Within the garden of roses

For it has grown without a tender hand

It grows through the broken cracks

It continues despite the storms

Its roots remain strong

And it blooms whether it is loved or not

And so shall I

Because in search of a perfect "now"

We have become too extravagant

About all the many moments

Wasting them carelessly

When they could be spent memorably

Or it happens that we only find faults

In blissful flows

Of hours and minutes

And fail to acknowledge

The aura of contentment in our now

That is present

I've read of raven and roads not taken

A love as red as roses in June

Caged birds singing and daffodils swaying

A girl with hair that hides the moon

Of captains dying and sidewalks ending

A man who loved everything alone

Smiles to remember and bleak Decembers

And the shadow on a stone

Oh but if only they had known

Their rhymes have fueled a flame in me

So I must start to write my own

About ashes and chaos and feelings

And you

And I hope you read this and think

Of ashes and chaos and feelings

And me
