prologue

"I'm sorry Luke... I just can't do this." He looked up at me, shocked. "Kaylie, please. You can't do this... the only reason I'm still here, is you." His finger went up to my chin, tilting my head up. I refused to look into his eyes. "Please look at me. I need you. More than you'll ever know."

I never believed in love until I met Luke. I thought guys were horrible, but I had judged too soon. I love him. There, I said it. But he... I don't know. He's a total ass most times, but he can also be the sweetest, most caring boy I have ever met. It's hard to know which version of him I'll get when he comes home from band practice.

I am not capable of loving him the way he needs to be loved. If this... thing that we had going on went on any further, I don't know what would happen. He might have gotten worse. Or, there's a slim chance that he would change. I just can't stick around to find out.

"Kaylie. Kaylie! Answer me, please." I could see the tears brimming in his eyes, and I felt mine start to itch like they always do when I'm going to cry. "I love you, I swear. Just give me one more chance."

"Luke..." He was making this harder than it should be. Part of me wants to stay and try, for him. But I can't. His head dropped and he shook his head.

"Luke," I tried again, feeling a lump rise in my throat. "I love you, and I think I always will. But I... I just need some time, okay?" I grabbed his face, looking him in the eyes.

"I'll wait. I'll be patient. And in the time that you need, I promise that I will try to fix myself. I know I can be a complete dick, but I will try to change. I will wait until you realize that we need each other, no matter what. And I know that I have used up all my chances, and that if you do decide to come back, I will be the luckiest man in the world."

I was getting close to losing it completely, and I couldn't do that. If I did, I would end up in his arms like nothing had happened. So I didn't. I let go of him, grabbed my bag, and walked to the door.

"Goodbye, Luke."

just a little side note - the following chapters will be labeled with "before" or "after" following the chapter number. the ones marked "before" occurred before the scene in the prologue. the ones marked "after" occur after the prologue (if you weren't sure). enjoy  ❤
