When I woke up this morning, I didn't expect for my life to get anymore weird then it already is. My names Serena Blackwell. I'm fifteen years old and I go to Mission Creek High with my best friend Leo Dooley.
This morning started out just like any other, I got dressed into a white v-neck vest top and blue denim shorts. I brush my dark brown hair and let it fall in waves to my shoulders, framing my round face. I look into the mirror real quick to make sure I'm ready. My brown eyes staring back at me.
Ping
I pull my phone out of my back pocket, it's a text from Leo.
"Hey, meet me by the school entrance. I have some people I want you to meet."
I send a quick reply telling him okay, then I slip on my black knock off converse and dash over to school so I'm not late.
~
"Hey, Leo!" I shout as I spot him stood by his locker with three other people. His head whips round and he smiles at me.
"Serena, Hey!" He pulls me into a quick hug, which I return whole heartedly. We turn to face the three kids stood next to us. "Serena, you remember my Mom got re-married right?" He asks me.
"Leo," I respond slowly, in a sarcastic tone. "I was at the wedding, your Mom made me the flower girl and I was forced to wear a dress."
"Right," He nods his head smiling. "Well these are my step-dads, kids, which he adopted." Gesturing his hand towards them like a showman. "This is Adam, Bree and Chase."
"Hi," They smiled and said in unison.
"Hi," I waved at them all with a warm smile. "It's nice to meet you."
"So, Serena," Bree starts, her hands in her pockets. "Are you Leo's girlfriend?"
Me and Leo look at each other, as we burst out laughing. My sides were in stiches, tears in my eyes as I wiped them. "Oh my god.... I can't breathe.... that's too funny." As we both got over our laughing fit, we looked at Bree and the boys, stood their confused.
"Oh god no!" Leo said, "Serena's great but we're just best friends, practically family." He smiled at me as the other three nodded their heads understanding the situation. Somehow this became an open invitation for Adam.
"So, this lovely lady is available?" He posed as his arm dropped around my shoulders. He flashed a smile and winked at me. Well, he's bound to be a heart breaker.
I shrug his arm from my shoulders and flash him my most dazling smile, "Yes, she is. Just not to you." I responded, moving away from the tall boy. His face fell like a puppies, as Leo, Chase and Bree laughed.
I stand back as I watch Adam wander off to talk to a girl by her locker, they seemed to be talking about something when Adam goes to open her locker and rips the door off it's hinges.
"How did he just do that?!" I ask the others, shocked. Chase just smiles and drags Adam back over too us. He tries to whisper to him but I hear the conversation. "Quit goofing off, we're supposed to not draw attention to ourselves." He says exasperated.
The bell rings out but all I can hear is Chase screaming in pain. He drops to the floor, with his hands over his ears, spinning in circles like a mad man. What the hell is going on? I look to Leo confused but he just stares at Chase until it stops.
"What's up with crazy?" He leans over to Bree, looking unfazed but more annoyed. What the heck? Bree respondes looking at me, "He has Ultra sensative hearing."
I look at Chase leaned up against Adams legs, looking panicked and tired. His bowl cut hair a little messed up. "What. Was. That?" He asks, looking at me.
"It's called a bell. We're you home schooled or something?"
Adam just nods at me, okay well that explains the confusion and crazy social skills.
Leo adds, "It rings every 40 minutes, 8 times a day. So..."
"Good luck with that." I finish for him. I pull Chase to his feet, and he sends me a greatful smile. I smile back as I adjust my messenger bag over my shoulder. "Well, that's our first class. I'll see you in gym Dooley." I holler back at Leo as I make my way to Math.
I settle down in my seat and set about getting the work done. Our teachers lazy and just leaves worksheets on the desk, anything that we don't finish is homework for next class. As I'm working through the problems I can't help but think back to what just happened. These guys act as though they have never seen the world. Like it's all brand new. How much of the world did they miss out on?
~
I walk into gym class after changing into my dingo t-shirt and black shorts. As I walk over to where Leo is sat I get wolf whistled by a Jock sat on the bleachers. I whip my head around and send him one of my iceist glares. His eyes widden and he hold his hands up in surrender. I flash my sickly sweet smile before joining Leo, who's sat with Adam and Chase. Both boys look at me, Adam who gives me a wink and Chase who smiles nervously. I roll my eyes at Adam and send a smile at Chase, I guess he's just embarrased after the bell incident.
"I hate gym class," Leo dispairs looking at the basketball court with detest. I nod in agreement, side smiling at him.
"Why?" Adam asks confused. Just then a ball lands near Leo and he catches it. He attempts to bounce the ball but fails miserably. I chuckle at his attempts as he glares at me and the boys, as Bree joins us. "That's why." He explains.
"So big deal, you can't play basketball. Chess club's where all the actions at." Chase says, nodding his head. I look at him like he's crazy, then I smile and laugh. They all look at me.
"You're a bit of a nerd, aren't you?" I ask Chase, the smile dropping from his face as he looks at the floor. I instantly feel bad for opening my mouth. "Hey," I say trying to make him fell better. "I'm a huge nerd too, just for movies and conspiracey theories." He smiles brightly at me, like he just made his first friend in the world. But I can't keep the smile from reaching my own face.
My attention is brought back to the real world as a ball is throw in our direction and Bree catches it. She looks around startled and panicked, "What do I do?" She asks.
"Throw it," Me and Leo say at the same time. She throws the blow hard and it goes flying across the court, connecting with a boys face. "To someone who's looking!" Leo says to her. Bree runs off to make sure the boy is okay, as I get up, scooping the ball up in my hands. I throw it and make the basket, the boys clapping with impressed faces. Leo looks at the net longlingly, grabbing a nearby ball.
"Just once, I'd like to show these fools up and go all NBA in their faces." He says, shaking the ball back and forth.
"Then why don't you?" Chase askes.
"Look at me," He practically screams. "There's more meat on a dog bone."
"He's not wrong," I say looking at the boys. I lost interest and went over to talk to the guy who was just hit in the face with the ball.
"Hey man, you alright?" I ask him. He opened his mouth to respond when all I heard was a scream. I knew that scream anywhere.
I spun on my heel fast as I watch Leo dunk the ball in the basket, hanging onto the rim for dear life. My mouth fall open wide as he fell to the ground with a thump.
I ran over to him, pushing past everybody to see if he was okay. Thank God, he's still breathing.
"Leo, you okay?" I ask as I pull him up.
"Yeah I'm fine." He replied. Then he froze, I followed his gaze to the people circling around us. They all hand confused or shocked expression, mouths had fallen open like mine.
Suddenly everybody was cheering, surrounding Leo as I got pushed out of the circle of new-found fans.
"Yeah, I got mad skills!" Leo shouted over the thundering applause. He was sure loving the attention. I smiled fondly to myself, looking over to the three new kids, who had the smile on their faces.
