The next few days were spent with rehearsals, performances, and countless arguments.
I'd usually start them, making some useless criticism.
Aiden would either fire back, or roll her eyes and respond with a simple "I hate you."
But she seemed to walk with her head up a little higher, a little more purpose in her step. She was counting the hours until the poetry cafe on Friday.
I wasn't exactly watching every tick of the clock, but I was looking forward to seeing what it was about.
I was getting ready to head over to the theater for a show with Aiden and the boys, when my phone rang.
I checked the time. Five or so minutes before I had to meet them at the front.
Jada was the caller, and she usually wasn't one to chat for hours upon hours, so I clicked 'accept'.
"Hey," her voice came through the speaker, sounding a little off. She sounded exhausted, and spoke quieter than usual.
"You feel okay? You sound sick."
"I'm not sick." She mumbled. "I'm just so...tired."
"Why? What happened?" I asked, suspicion creeping into my mind.
She took a deep breath. "I, um,"
"Jada? What's wrong?"
"I...I had a miscarriage." Her voice broke.
My heart sunk. "What?"
She sniffed. "Yeah. I just wanted to call and let you know."
"Did you tell Oak?"
"Yeah, we just got home from the hospital."
"Did they take care of you alright?" My eyes stung."Yeah."
"Do you need anything?"
"Can you come visit? I know you're probably busy right now,"
"I'll come visit as soon as I can." A tear escaped my eye. "Do you want me to bring the boys?"
"All five of you, if you can."
I nodded. "We'll come see you tonight."
"Thank you, Sky."
"No problem."
She cut the connection, and I was left with terrible silence.
I tried to keep myself from crying, but there wasn't any use. I sat down against the wall with my head in my hands. My phone buzzed a couple times, but I didn't notice.
I was probably late to the theater, but I didn't notice.
I didn't even notice the knock at the door.
"Sky?" Aiden called. "You're late."
I didn't answer. She knocked again and cracked the door open, peeking inside.
"Sky?"
She finally opened the door and stepped in, her eyes scanning the room, until they found me.
"Sky?" She knelt down beside me. "What's the matter?"
I slowly lifted my head from my hands, revealing my tear-stained face. I leaned my head back against the wall, not daring to meet her gaze.
"What happened?" She asked gently, swiping a tear-track off of my cheek with her thumb.
"Jada miscarried." I said through gritted teeth, refusing to let my voice break.
