Deryn's POV

I didn't have any problems sleeping with him there.  It felt awkward, but oh well...

I was actually having a nice dream about school, when I heard a loud shout.  "Carl!" said the voice, and I looked around in my dream but I couldn't find the source of the yelling.  Then, my eyes snapped open as my brother screamed my name.  Carl got up so quick I thought it was unnatural, and my head fell on to the bed. However, it wasn't Carl by choice getting up, it was Sumner yanking him.

He put his hands up in defense, as if to say "we didn't do anything," because Sumner wouldn't let him talk.  I got up and intervened.

"Sumner, we didn't do anything!" I shouted at him.

"Then why was he in the bed with you?" he snapped, his brown eyes narrowing.  When he was angry, his eyes turned dark, almost blackish, and it was sort of scary.

"I had I nightmare.  I asked him to stay!"

"Bull crap!" Sumner yelled.  He pushed Carl and went to throw a punch, but I stepped in just in time, and instead, he punched me straight in the jaw bone.  The ground came up to meet me quickly.  From there, everything went black.

Carl's POV

Sumner came towards me quickly and pushed me by my shoulders.  I stumbled but quickly regained, just to see Sumner punch Deryn across the face.  I had a feeling it was aimed for me and not her, because he wasn't that type of person to hit a girl let alone his sister.  Rick and Daryl burst through the door.

"What the hell happened here?" Rick shouted, immediately looking at me.

"They slept together!" Sumner yelled in my direction.

"No we didn't!" I protested.  "We still have clothes on, see?"  I gestured to my shirt and pants, and then at Deryn who was still on the floor.  Oh crap, she's knocked out.  I kneeled down to help her, but Sumner dashed towards me yelling,

"Don't touch her!"  Daryl caught him just in time so he didn't clobber me.  He was dragged out of the room and down the stairs struggling.

"Why don't you go ahead and bring her downstairs to Carol?" Rick asked calmly.

"Does that mean you believe me?" I asked hopefully.

"Yes... I trust you Carl," he put a hand on my shoulder and walked out of the room.  So, I picked up Deryn that way I did yesterday and went down to Carol's doctor room thingy.  She was already there and told me to put her on the bed, and then pushed me out of the room.

**An hour later**

As I was walking down the hall to go back up to mine and Deryn's room, she came out with a wet rag on the right side of her jaw.  I couldn't see what was under it, but I imagined her jaw was bruised.  I frowned while she smiled.

"Lemme see," I demanded quietly.  She looked behind me, sighed, and shook her head.   I turned and saw Sumner walk into another room glaring.  Rick followed him inside.

"Lets go upstairs," I whispered and followed her to our shared room.  She went and looked out of the huge window in the back.  It was raining pretty hard.  I went over to her, and she looked up at me with her two-different colored eyes.  I was about four or five inches taller than her.  "Can I see?" She shook her head and looked back out of the window at the storm outside.

I frowned and sighed.  "I'm sorry," I said.

"Why?" she croaked without looking at me, and by the look on her face I could tell it pained her to talk because of her jaw.

"It's my fault your brother punched you, Deryn," I told her.  She shook her head and made a face that said, 'No it's not, you retard', without looking at me once again.  Trying to convince her it was my fault wasn't going to happen, so I gave up.  I heard her shift beside me with a pained look and she adjusted the wet cloth.

Without warning, I turned her towards me and gently removed her hand from her cheek.  Deryn's jawline was badly bruised.  No wonder it hurt her to talk.  I felt horrible for her.  She turned away from me and went to lay down on her bed, on her back.

"Do you need me to stay with you again?" I asked quietly from the window.  She nodded slightly.

"Will you open the window a bit please, before you lay down?" Deryn asked softly.  I complied by swinging one of them open halfway, and the room was filled with the rhythmic pitter-patter of the rain outside, and occasional rumble of thunder.  Then, I went over to her bed and laid at the edge, and made a mental note to wake up early and move back to my own in the morning before someone came upstairs.  We both fell asleep to the sound of the pouring rain.
