SCENE D
EXT. CAFETERIA PAVILION – NEXT DAY
Ariella and Mae enter. Mae records Ariella on her camera.
ARIELLA
This is a sneak peek into my brand new watch collection.
She displays her watch.
ARIELLA (CONT'D)
Fourteen ninety-nine plus tax.
MAE
With the family and friends discount of So Borrowing That.
Ariella notices a crowd gathering in the back. Mae stops recording.
ARIELLA
I bet they're protesting the vending machine. That thing makes more money gypping students than I earned dressing the quadruplet sisters.
MAE
That's no protest. It's the return of the stage monster.
They move through the crowd until they make it to the front of the courtyard stage. Torin dances while twirling a ribbon to opera music. The crowd makes room as she runs forward, does a front flip off the stage and lands with the ribbon spiraling to her side. She approaches Ariella.
TORIN
Let's see if you can top that.
ARIELLA
Why does everything have to be a competition with you?
TORIN
That's just it. There is no competition. I'm the star of this school. You can say buh-bye to your fanbase because, after that performance, no one will even remember who your name.
She whips her ribbon in the air and exits. The crowd cheers her on.
ARIELLA
What if she's right? Am I forgettable?
MAE
Of course not. Your designs are a big hit.
ARIELLA
But you've seen what Torin's capable of. She's a one-woman show with enough ego to fill her own stadium. If I don't figure out a way to stand out, I will be so last season.
The opera music returns. Ariella looks at Mae who's watching Torin's performance on her camera.
ARIELLA
Seriously?
MAE
I wanted to try it at home.
