SCENE I
EXT. CAFETERIA COURTYARD – NEXT DAY
The courtyard is crowded with students gathered around the stage. Onstage, Torin is calm and confident while Ariella plays it cool behind a big, fancy hat and sunglasses. Justine stands in front of the stage facing Mae's camera.
JUSTINE
This is Justine Halloway live from the courtyard bringing you exclusive coverage of the Crestview Show-Off. Two contenders will compete in the hopes of winning a cover story written by DP's very own, Mae Mendoza.
Mae turns the camera onto herself.
MAE
Who now wishes she would have just stuck with make-up.
She turns the camera back to Justine.
JUSTINE
It's time to show-off.
TORIN
Gladly.
Torin pulls over a wagon full of trophies. She picks one up.
TORIN (CONT'D)
Not only am I the best looking of the entire neighborhood, but I've been the most outstanding performer for five years straight.
SERIES OF CUTS: Torin shows a multitude of awards, trophies, and ribbons as the crowd gradually loses interest.
Torin holds up a giant trophy.
TORIN
And finally, my award for breaking the record of holding the most awards.
The crowd applauds lightly. Justine is sitting in the grass, jaded.
JUSTINE
Thank you, Torin. Ariella, you know what to do.
TORIN
Can't wait to hear this.
ARIELLA
Thanks, Justine. Now it's time for some real entertainment.
She takes out a remote and clicks it behind her. A projection screen lowers with pumping music as a photoshopped photo of herself posing on a red carpet appears on the screen.
ARIELLA
Welcome to my world. Home to all the latest fashions and the biggest stars.
The next photo shows her on stage with a boy band. Next, she's sitting in the front row at Fashion Week. Next, she's lounging in a private jet, laughing with the former president. The crowd is loving it. Everyone except Mae.
ARIELLA
I can't do this.
She shuts off the presentation.
ARIELLA (CONT'D)
The truth is, my life is no more spectacular than any of yours. Everything you just saw was fake. Including the person you see right now.
She removes her hat and glasses.
ARIELLA (CONT'D)
I wanted so much for everyone to believe in me that I pretended to be someone else entirely, and that wasn't fair to you or me. If anyone deserves the cover story, it's Torin. No matter how obnoxious, bossy, and just plain scary she is, at least she's been herself the whole time. And from now on, so will I.
TORIN
You heard it here first, ladies and gentleman. I'm the star once again.
She backflips off the stage beside Mae.
TORIN (CONT'D)
I hope you have plenty of memory left on that camera because it has a full day of Torin ahead of it.
Mae squeaks in horror as Torin drags her away.
