May I Have This Dance?

The band started playing a slow and romantic song. I noticed all the people around me were asking for partners or already with their desired partner- like my father and mother a few feet away from our group.

I just stood awkwardly as the music continued, and Philip fixed his collar a bit. Theo got that damn glimmer in her eye again and quickly told Martha that she had to show her something. Before Martha even responded she was yanked off the dance floor by Theo.

Subtle girls... real subtle.

Philip and I turned to each other snickering a bit.

"Well..." I mumbled.

"Yeah.." He pursed his lips awkwardly.

"Uh, you wanna dance?" I finally asked. Philip looked back at me and smirked.

"No no no, you can't say it like that!"

"What? How am I supposed to say it then?" I raised an eyebrow at him. He suddenly grabbed my hand and laid a gentle kiss on my knuckles like he always does, then looked into my eyes.

"Ms. Washington, May I have this dance?" He asked in the smoothest and flirtiest voice I've ever heard him speak in. I blushed and nodded with a giggle.

He smiled and we shifted into the dancing positions we've come to know as we grew up. His right hand sneaked around the side of my waist while his left held my right hand in the air, and my left hand was placed faintly on his shoulder.

Philip, the confident person he was, quickly took the lead as we did a small waltz around our little section of the dance floor. I said the steps to myself in my head as we danced; the last thing I needed was to step on his toes.

Left, up, right, down, repeat.

Philip raised his eyebrow a bit and squeezed my right hand that was in his. Did he want to spin me? I assume he wants to spin me.

Luckily I was right. He let go of my waist as I stepped back an inch, and his hand held mine in place as I twirled. My dress spun out and around then suddenly stopped when Philip pulled me back in.

We kept dancing, but Philip was staring at me. It made my cheeks light up, but I was too caught up in his gaze to look away.

His eyes traced every feature of my face, like he was studying me. I watched as his eyes flickered to and fro as we waltzed around subconsciously.

The music was still going, but it seemed so far away from me and Philip. The rest of the dancing couples seemed to fade away too; it was like we were the only ones there.

He kept staring at me, but now he was watching my eyes, as if I was the only one there.

Why me? I asked myself. We were only childhood friends. Why am I the one you wanted to see?

Philip squeezed my hand again, but this time with a small smile. I slightly nodded and stepped back again, closing my eyes as I twirled for the second time.

He pulled me back once I faced him again, but I didn't open my eyes early enough, and ran into his chest. I snapped my eyes open and tried to pull away to apologize, but Philip instead just held me there- while I on the other hand was almost panicking.

He stepped to continue the dance while he held me. I didn't know what else to do so I also wrapped my arms around his torso and continued the dance.

My right ear was against his chest, and I could hear his heartbeat (somehow through all the layers a man's suit had). It was erratic and quick, and it definitely wasn't from dancing.
