I would say one of the worst nights of my life, other than Johnny's and Dally's deaths, took place about 4 weeks later. I'd never knew what it was like to feel miserably worried for someone, until that fateful July 30th, 1966.
The whole gang was hanging at the local park at 11 at night. Since it was the summer, Darry didn't mind us staying out late. In fact, he stayed out late too. Maggie and me were strolling around a block away, while the guys talked in the park. We heard a familiar revving sound, and saw headlights on our tail.
"Hey greaser!"
"Old nasty greasers!"
"Magnolia!"Maggie looked at me and looked back at the car. We both broke out in a run, which caused the car to speed behind us. They were gonna mow us down if we didn't get outta dodge. I pulled Maggie in a sharp turn and we tore right for the park. We were screaming the whole time.
"Darry! Soda! Help!"
"Guys! It's them! It's them!"
"Help!"
Darry bolted up as soon as we came in view. The mustang was hot on our trail, and we heard a gunshot ring out.
"Oh my gosh! Ponyboy! Maggie!" Darry shouted as he pulled us behind him. The guys formed a wall of protection in front of us. We heard the socs get out of their mustang and slam the doors."Now I am done playing these stupid games, Darrel. Now you hand my sister over. Now." I heard Mickey shout.
"Over my dead body. She ain't going with you. You aren't welcome here, Jones. You're on our turf. Now I suggest you get the hell outta here!" Darry stiffened up.
"Or what? You gonna stab me like your little runt did to Bob?" Mickey snickered. I bit my tongue.
"Okay that's enough. You back up, pal." Sodapop stepped closer, but Mickey clubbed him in the face. Soda fell down and blood streamed from his nose. Maggie and I ran over to him.
"Soda! Are you okay?" Maggie looked worried.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine." Soda groaned.
"Are you alright?" Darry looked angry.
"I said I'm okay!" Soda snapped. Mickey cackled.
"See? Wasn't so bad, eh Sodapop?"Maggie gritted her teeth. She got up from beside Sodapop and started to push her way past Darry.
"Maggie..!" I hissed. She tore her wrist out of my hand and pushed past the guys."That's quite enough, Mickey!" She roared. "Magnolia! Just the gal I wanted to see." Mickey grinned insanely. His grin turned into a death stare. "You're coming with me."
"No I most certainly am not. This is my home. These guys are my family. You don't get to come in here, on their, our, territory and tell me what to do. You lost that privilege. You don't order me around anymore." She spat. "I don't get it, I really don't! Why, Mick? What have I done to you? You obviously don't like me, so I stay out of your way and I don't interact with you! It's never good enough! Why can't you just leave me alone?" Maggie looked like she was about to cry. Mickey shrugged. "Because, you're just taking up space" He said coldly. Maggie looked so hurt."You're nothing but a cold hearted coward." Maggie's voice broke.
"Excuse me? Is that so?" Mickey snarled. "I've put up with you for so long, Magnolia. I'm not asking you. You come with me, or I'll kill your precious family." My blood turned to ice. Darry's eyes grew fiery by the minute. Sodapop now stood by Darry and was just as angry as he was.
"Well you'll have to grow a set and get through me." Maggie shot back. Mickey chuckled softly. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her forward. "Once I'm done with you, you won't ever see these bums again." He hissed.
"Don't touch her!"
"Hey!"
"Let her go, you freak!"
"Nasty soc, you leave her alone!"We all shouted at Mickey and tried to intervene, but them socs pulled switches on us. And of course, none of us had any weapons to use.
"Don't touch me!" Maggie yelled and yanked herself from his grip. "You don't ever touch me! You hear? You touch me like that again, and you won't got no hands to touch me with! I'm not scared of you!" Maggie yelled. Mickey wheeled around and slapped her across the face. Her head jerked to the side and her hair covered her face. She huffed and nodded before wiping the blood off of her cheek. It was quite silent for a minute. Maggie raised her head and looked at her brother. Without hesitation, Maggie whipped around and grabbed a handgun from Soda's belt. Nobody, not even I knew he had it. Darry looked in horror at Soda, but immediately turned and saw Maggie cock and raise the gun at Mickey.
"Get out of here." She said. A single tear fell down her face.
"Magnolia...don't make me drag you into the car." Mickey said in a sarcastically pleading voice. After that was a blur. Mickey started moving towards Maggie and went to grab her. There was a lot of yelling, and then a loud pop, and more screaming, and I just don't know. It's hard to recall. The next thing I knew, Mickey was on the ground, blood gushing from his thigh and yelling cuss words at Maggie. She dropped the gun and looked absolutely horrified. She backed up a bit and bolted off. Darry tried to grab her but she ran off towards the house.
