Blossomkit opened her eyes to see pelting black rain pouring outside, soaking everything in its path. She rubbed her eyes, then looked around her. Swiftwind was quietly eating a small blackbird, while Whisperkit, Nutkit, and Larksong were sleeping. Iceflower, another one of the Queens who didn't have any kits, but still loved to stay in the Nursery to play with newborn kits, and help their mothers, was nowhere to be seen.
Probably hunting, Blossomkit thought.
It had been a day since Swirlpaw had come in with the mysterious medicine, and Blossomkit was determined to find someone who would help her answer her questions today.
Maybe Larksong? No, not her. I don't want to disturb her sleep. Swiftwind? No, she probably won't even know about the medicine. It seemed like Swirlpaw didn't want anyone to know that I was taking the medicine yesterday, so she probably didn't tell her. Iceflowers not here, so I can't ask her... Think, think, THINK! I know- Leafstorm! If Swirlpaw knows about it, then her mentor must know too... Blossomkit thought with determination. Only, she didn't know where Leafstorm was.
Blossomkit padded over to Swiftwind, who was still eating her blackbird.
"Good morning Swiftwind" Blossomkit mewed politely.
"Good morning, Blossomkit. Not a very nice day out, huh?" Swiftwind replied, beckoning to the pounding gray rain outside. Blossomkit nodded, trying not to seem to urgent and frantic. She wanted to keep the conversation between her and Leafstorm, so no one would try and stop her from asking questions.
"So, uh, do you know where I could find Leafstorm?" Blossomkit asked as casually as she possibly could be. Swiftwinds eyes were kind, but they flashed with suspicion.
Maybe she does know about the secrets after all....
"Why do you want to see Leafstorm?" Swiftwind narrowed her eyes. Blossomkit shrugged.
"I- uh- got a... thorn in my paw! Yeah, I got it in their yesterday, just wanted to make sure it didn't get infected..." Blossomkit trailed off. She knew that Swiftwind didn't believe her, but she didn't press her with any more questions.
"Yes, she's in the den sorting herbs with Swirlpaw. But she'd very busy, so you can only talk to her for a little bit. Do you understand?" Swiftwind explained strictly. Blossomkit nodded her head vigorously. She didn't really listen to Swiftwind, but she was just so relieved that she would be able to talk to the Medicine Cat about these strange secrets.
"As you probably know" Swiftwind continued, "we, as TimberClan cats do not live on the ground, we live in the trees. We have adapted to jumping far distances from branch to branch, and every nest and den is made out of a knothole in a tree, or a thick branch, or some other sort of protection made out of the trees. We have made it so that we entangled small branches that make a sort of floor across from tree to tree, which makes it easier for us to walk around without falling. But these floors are not completely stable, and so I am going to carry you across, just so you don't fall, alright?" The Queen explained. Blossomkit listened in fascination at how amazingly her Clan lived. Building a floor out of tree branches? Living in nooks and crannies in trees? Being able to jump so far from branch to branch? Hardly any of the other Clans could even climb trees, let alone use the resources of the trees, and adapt to life here in the forest so well. But Blossomkit snapped out of it, remembering her mission.
"Yes, Swiftwind, I understand" Blossomkit meowed. Swiftwind picked her up by the scruff and began walking. Outside, the world was still pelting with rain. But the thick canopy of leaves and branches shielded them from most of it, so the two only got a little damp. Once they were out of the Nursery, Blossomkit gasped.
Down far below was the ground, and right under them was the floor that the TimberClan cats had been working on for years so that they could walk peacefully form branch to branch without jumping. The floor was elaborately entwined and tangled together with twigs, leaves, branches, and even vines, like Swiftwind had mentioned. It was very stable, and thick, but also like Swiftwind had said, it was not completely stable. It swayed, and bounced underneath the weight of the pregnant Queen, and Blossomkit, but it held, nonetheless.
They finally reached the Medicine Cat den, which was the second highest nest, apart from the Nursery, which was so high so attacking Clans couldn't get at the Queens and kits. It was a huge, thick branch that had an almost flat surface, like a board, and it was many tail lengths wide, big enough for least six or seven cats. The Medicine Cats had then put up many other, smaller, yet longer tree branches, and laid them diagonally, so one side rested on the big thick branch, and the other side rested up against the trunk, like a teepee. Inside, they found Leafstorm, and Swirlpaw, who both had many piles of herbs at their paws, as well as many piles stacked around them. All if the herbs not being used right then were stuffed in nooks and crannies in the tree trunk that the other branches rested on, as a place for protection and storage.
Leafstorm looked up from where she was sorting herbs.
"Yes, what is it?" She asked, while returning to sorting a stack of long green grasses with orange flowers blossoming at the tips.
"Blossomkit said she had a thorn in her paw. She doesn't want it to get infected" Swiftwind explained, still looking a little suspicious. Leafstorm nodded. Then, she padded over to one of the crannies in the trunk, and pulled out some more herbs. She beckoned with her tail for Blossomkit to come to her. Blossomkit walked over, then hissed into Leafstorms ear, "I really need to talk to you. Alone".
Leafstorm looked baffled by this, and even a little annoyed that she couldn't get back to her herb sorting. But she sighed anyway, and meowed to Swiftwind, "you can go now. I'll tend to Blossomkits- thorn. I'll bring her back afterward" Leafstorm informed her, trying not to look as confused as she was. Swiftwind nodded slowly. Now there was pure suspicion in her eyes, and she was not trying to hide it. But, she went.
Leafstorm beckoned to the entrance with her tail, then exited. Blossomkit fallowed her, and, thankfully, Swirlpaw didn't question either one of them for leaving.
Blossomkit and Leafstorm padded around to the back of the den across the cat made floor, and finally settled on a tree branch, on the other side of the trunk from the den, where they could talk in peace.
"Now, what's going on?" Leafstorm asked kindly.
"Well- Swirlpaw was being really weird around me yesterday! She said I had to take this- 'medicine', and it was a purple pulp. And she said that all kits had to take it, but later I asked Whisperkit, and Nutkit, but they said they had no idea what I was talking about! And Swirlpaw looked really guilty, and uncomfortable when she was talking about it. And another thing! Why was my mother so happy when I opened my eyes on the first day? I mean, I know she's my mother and all, but Whisperkit, and Nutkit said she hadn't made that big a deal when they opened their eyes! And one more thing! Why were you saying, when I opened my eyes, that you had thought I wouldn't make it through the night?! Was I supposed to die, or what?!" Blossomkit was really bubbling up and exploding with anger now. She was now spitting and growling the words, and she knew that she was close to tears.
So many lies, so many questions, so many mysteries....
Leafstorm sighed, apparently not wanting to talk about this, just like Swirlpaw. But as she gazed at Blossomkit exploding in anger about all of the truth that had been kept from her ever since that first day she opened her eyes, she knew she had to tell her.
It's time she knew... Leafstorm thought.
"Well, to put it simply, Blossomkit, you were- you weren't like any of the other kits. You were small, and weak, and- well, I'm sorry, but Blossomkit- you were a runt."
