The cats traveled in silence for a while after their rest, the only sound being the soft grass as it crunched beneath their paws. The long yellow stalks hid them from view, yet they were still on a wide, open space. Russetkit felt at home here, even though he didn't know where here was. He turned to the light gray she cat with a white belly, white paws and white ears.
"You have no idea how many questions I have" Russetkit said, shaking his head. The she cat chuckled.
"I figured" she replied, pushing aside a long grass clump.
"Well, for starters, what are all your names?" Russetkit asked.
"Well, my name is Cloudpetal. As you can see, I'm the Leader of this patrol. I'm a very young warrior of the Clan, just became one about a moon ago. And over there is my brother, Lakeberry. He's older than me, but he also just recently became a warrior with me. We also have another brother, Birdshade. He's the Medicine Cat of our Clan."
"Clan?" Russekit asked, severely confused. As far as he knew, there were only four Clans, and they all lived near TimberClan. None of the other Clans really knew about all of Ashstars schemes, just that he was an ambitious and strict Leader.
"I will explain all of that in a moment" Cloudpetal replied.
"Next is this lovely tom over here. He is my wonderful mate, and loyal Warrior, Lightheart" Cloudpetal motioned over to a yellow tom with red stripes running down his back, tail and legs. Lightheart nuzzled the she cat, nodding to Russetkit in a greeting.
"Pleasure to meet you, Russekit, is it?" Lightheart meowed politely. Russetkit nodded his head slowly. How did this tom know his name?
"He has sun power. I will also explain that in a moment. Next is Beetlepool" Cloudpetal gestured to a black she cat with brown spots all over, who was carrying a white she cat on her back. Beetlepool nodded a greeting to him. She was obviously not a very talkative one.
One by one, Cloudpetal introduced each and every cat of the patrol. After Cloudpetal, Lakeberry, and Beetlepool, there was Dappledfeather, Beetlepools sister, Fuzzyclaw, Walnutear, and Sweetnose. Russetkit shook his head in confusion, trying to digest all of this new information. Cloudpetal chuckled.
"I know, I know, it's a lot to take in. Now, I will explain our Clan. When Ashstar took over TimberClan, you probably know that he drove many cats who did not have talents out. So those cats started a new Clan, called SparkClan, which represents the spark that we are that will grow into a fire that will rebel and destroy Ashstar. We all want Ashstar gone. Our Leader is Applestar. He was the first cat to be outcast by Ashstar. And our deputy is your mother."
Russekit blinked. His mother, a deputy?! That was a great achievement for her, and Russetkit agreed that it was a good fit for her. She was an amazing fighter and provider for her Clan, and spoke up for what she believed in. She had great leadership qualities, and was persistent and kind. All and all, if she made it that far, she would make a great leader.
"And lastly, let me explain our- and your- powers. I'm sure you were quite shocked to find that you could shoot fire from your paws" Cloudpetal laughed. Russetkit nodded, smiling at how kind she was. He was taking a liking to her, and to everyone else.
"Well, apparently StarClan foresaw that there would be a great war between Ashstar and the other Clans. So, from the day that Ashstar became Leader, whenever a new kit was born, in any Clan, they would give that kit a power. There's the original powers, air, fire, water, and earth, but there's also other more exotic powers too. There's sun power, which Lightheart has, and he can release beams of sun from his paws, and burn cats, kind of like you with your fire power. There's also bug power, which Beetlepool has. She can summon all of the bugs in a close distance to aid her, and she can cause them to swarm in and attack the enemy. I myself, and Lakeberry, have water power. Our brother has healing power, which helps him with his Medicine Cat duties. Although he also needs to use herbs at times, whenever he touches a major injury on a cat, it will automatically heal. He cannot heal minor injuries, like cuts or scrapes, though. He uses herbs for that kind of stuff" Cloudpetal explained everything to him.
"What about the cats that weren't born with powers?" Russetkit questioned, still a little confused at the whole prospect of powers.
"Ah, a very good question. There is an enormous tree in our territory, called the Great Willow, and if you go inside a knothole at the base of the tree, and go through a tunnel, you will come into a dark underground clearing. There, all the powers are scattered onto the floor. What I mean by 'powers scattered' is that their symbols are laid out all around the clearing. For example, if I was not born with a power, and I wanted water power, I would look for a ball of water. Or if Lightheart wanted sun power, he would look for a sun. There is always a StarClan cat there to guide you, and help you find your power" She finished. Russetkits head was spinning with all of this information, but he shook his head and managed to concentrate.
"Any more questions?" Cloudpetal asked. Russetkit nodded.
"How did you find me, and how do you know my name? And where are we going?"
"Whoa, slow down! One at a time. Well, we found you because we saw the smoke and the fire in the forest from our camp, and we knew that we needed to help any survivors, and Blossompaw, whom your mother told us about. So Applestar sent out two separate patrols. Us, to look in the west part of the forest, where we found you, and another to investigate the east part of the forest, where they probably found Blossompaw. And we know your name because your mother told us about you. She told us her whole life story, so we also know about Whisperpaw, Nutpaw, Minnowsplash, and everyone else. By the way, aren't you supposed to be dead?" Cloudpetal asked casually, even though it was a serious and confusing matter.
"Well, I- uh, it's a long story" Russetkit replied.
"We've got time" the gray and white she cat reassured him. Russetkit sighed, and told her his whole story. How he died as a kit, and how he went through the portal just a few hours ago.
"But I still don't get it- am I a real cat, or just a spirit?" Russetkit finished. Cloudpetal bit her lip, thinking. Suddenly, she snapped her head around to him.
"I've got it! You can go to the Great Willow tomorrow, and consult StarClan for answers! We have a very special way of reaching our ancestors. You have to go to the top of the Great Willow, and close you eyes, and wait for the wind to blow your fur. Once it does, you breathe in deeply, and then you will be transported to StarClan. It's a little different, because you don't exactly fall asleep, but you inhale magical wind that StarClan sends so you can consult them. But don't worry, your body's still here, but your spirits in StarClan. Did anyone else come with you?" Cloudpetal questioned. Russetkit nodded.
"My father, Minnowsplash."
"Oh, Larksong will be so happy to see her mate! And she was on the other patrol, so they probably already found him and your sister" Cloudpetal exclaimed joyfully. They continued walking in silence for a while, taking a break from talking. But then Russetkit turned to her again.
"Where exactly are we going?" He asked awkwardly. Cloudpetal turned to him once more.
"Oh dear me, I forgot all about explaining our home to you. Well, no matter, here we are!" Cloudpetal replied. Russekit turned to look in front of him, and once the stalks of grass parted, a beautiful sight took place. The waterfall that he saw earlier came into view. It sparkled in the sunlight, and flowers of all different colors surrounded it. More cats milled around a clearing near the waterfall, and they looked up as they realized the patrol had returned. Rocks of all sizes we scattered around the clearing, but so far Russetkit couldn't see any dens. Besides the abundant water source, it didn't look like much of an ideal camp.
"Wow. It's really beautiful. Where are the dens though?" Russetkit asked awkwardly.
"Under the rocks. You'll most likely be living here from now on, so you'll need to learn about all of that. But first, we must drop the bodies off at the Medicine Cat den. Like I said before, our brothers the Medicine Cat. Birdshade, that's his name" Cloudpetal replied. The patrol all padded over to a cluster of rocks. Cloudpetal and the other cats started rolling a few rocks away, revealing a large, gaping hole. They padded into the hole, entering a tunnel. They walked along the dim tunnel, rolling the rocks back onto the entrance as they went. At the end of the tunnel was a dimly lit den of dirt. Birdshade was sitting in the den, sorting herbs of all shapes and colors. There were a few tiny pieces of bark on fire in corners of the den, lighting the room. Birdshade looked up as the patrol padded in.
"Oh, Cloudpetal, thank StarClan you're safe" Birdshade sighed, nuzzling his sister. He looked around at the patrol.
"What happened to Lakeberry?" Birdshade asked, starting to panic.
"Right here" Lakeberry poked his head above the crowd and pushed his way through to meet his brother. "I'm fine. No burns thanks to my water powers."
"And we have some survivors" Cloudpetal added. All the cats, including Russetkit, dropped their cargo gently onto the floor for Birdshade to examine. He sniffed their pelts.
"A few burns, and some smoke inhaled, but nothing serious. It will take time for them to heal, though. Where are they from? And who is this?" Birdshade questioned, gesturing to Russetkit. The ginger tom stepped forward so Birdshade could see him.
"We found the cats in the TimberClan forest. And this is one of Larksongs sons- Russetkit" Cloudpetal explained. Birdshades eyes widened, as he had heard before that the kit was dead. But before he could speak, Cloudpetal cut him off.
"Applestar will make an announcement explaining everything that happened" she reassured her brother. Birdshade reluctantly nodded, but set to work on treating his new patients. The patrol left, and padded to a den that was behind the waterfall, and hidden from sight. Russetkit hopped away so he would not get sprayed by the chilly water. The cats padded into a dark cave, which echoed with the sounds of dripping water, and their padding footsteps.
"Applestar, it's Cloudpetal and my patrol. And we've got a visitor" Cloudpetal called into the shadows. And out of the darkness stepped Applestar, a reddish tom with yellow paws ears and belly, and dark red stripes on his back. Russetkit dipped his head, as did all of the other cats.
"This is Russetkit. One of Larksongs sons" Cloudpetal informed him slowly, waiting for his reaction. Applestar looked surprised, and raised his eyebrows, but smiled nonetheless.
"Welcome, Russetkit. We have much to discuss" he meowed warmly.AUTHORS NOTE:
