I never thought that I would be moving. Of course, no one ever does. I lived in the same small town for all of my life. All eighteen long, excruciating years of my parents fighting. They finally gave up and decided they would be better off separating.
To be honest, I never thought that they actually would go through with it. As I loaded the last box into the U-Haul and watched my mom lock the back, it suddenly all became very real. I had said goodbye to my friends last night, but it didn't seem like we ever really had enough time. In only one and a half years, I would've walked across the same stage as them to receive my diploma.
My friend Molly didn't seem too shaken up about it, but my best friend Tatiana could not stop crying. She and I had become close over the last few months. Like, really close. I think she spent the night and cuddled more than my dad's dog and my pillows combined.
I never really was that social. I think that's why I'm so scared about this move. I only had two best friends in a town I lived in my whole life and now I'm moving to the middle-of-nowhere-freaking-Indiana of all places. Making friends will be tough. But, it's only less than two years until graduation... I could survive the school year without friends, right?
"Brianna Lynn, we have to go or your sister will beat us to the new house," my mother shouted from the open window of the U-Haul.
"Okay mom, I just need a second to say bye," I replied.
In the doorway of my childhood home stood my dad. He was tall and in most ways I took after him. I got my dark hair and tan skin from him. I would also take watching sports on the couch with him over shopping with my mom any day. I had to admit that I would miss him, but my mom needed me more.
"Come here Brilynn. I need one last hug before you go." He always used my nickname when he talked to me.
"Dad, it's only a five-hour drive to visit you. Anders isn't that far from Nashville, I can come down some weekend soon. You know I'll miss the Tennessee hills." I knew I could keep that promise.
"I know," he chuckled. "I'll hold you to that promise in a few weeks. You can even bring some of your new friends with you. That is, if anyone gets over how utterly weird you are."
"Hey now," I knew he was joking, but it still has a little truth. " let's not bruise my ego right before I leave. But seriously, I'll make sure to call you soon. Love you pops."
"I love you too pumpkin. Now don't make your mother wait any longer." He hugged me one last time and then walked me to the truck.
The drive wasn't that bad, just a little boring. I mean it didn't turn to fall-asleep-drooling-on-yourself boring until you got to Indiana. They weren't kidding about the cornfields everywhere. And I mean, EVERYWHERE.
Holy shit. Who the hell needed this much corn.
Five hours away from where I live my life up until recently, in Anders Indiana, laid my new life. I really didn't want this. I didn't hate my mom for doing this to me, I just.... I might have been a little disappointed. I'd miss Tatiana, Molly, and my dad more than I cared to admit. I can do this though. Moving somewhere new this late in my high school career couldn't be that terrible.
**SEVERAL HOURS LATER AT THE NEW HOUSE**
"Why are you doing this Mom," my sister, Charlie, yelled from the top of the stairs.
"I can't be in the same house as that man anymore, Charlie. You know that more than anyone. I can't keep living on as the perfect little family when nothing is right." She sounded like she was crying. "Your father loves you and you know that. We just need some time apart. You can go visit him soon, I promise."
