Mischief is My Middle Name

Chapter 4

It was a long flight to London, and by the time we arrived it was around midnight.

"I guess we'll be sleeping on the jet tonight." I muttered. I looked at the three girls passed out in their seats. I unbuckled them and leaned Tera on the left side of my chest and wrapped my arm around her. I leaned Kara against the right side of my chest. I leaned Lilly on Kara and wrapped my arm around them both. I felt my eyes become heavy and shut them, only to be dragged into a nightmare.

*nightmare*

"Mom? Dad? Where are you?" I yelled while walking around aimlessly. Then I saw them. I ran towards them, when I reached them I turned them around to see their eyes just sockets, empty, and lifeless. Then they started to peel their faces off, slowly, their muscles appearing inch by inch. Then they threw their faces to the side, and started tearing at the tissue on their faces. Nothing was left but their skulls. I backed away from them slowly. I bumped into something or someone. I turned around to see Amber, Lilly, Kara, and Tera staring at me with expressions of a person who would be mentally disturbed. Their eyes seemed to be bugging out. That's when they tackled me to the ground. I screamed, but no one was around to hear my pleas.

"Noel? Noel! NOEL WAKE UP!" I felt as if I was being shaken.

*end of nightmare*

"Noel wake up!" I heard the girls saying. I finally felt a hand hit my face. Instantly my eyes shot open to find the girls staring at me with worried faces.

"Sorry girls, I had a bad dream." I explained.

"Anna Hatch?" I heard the voice of a woman ask. I turned in the direction of the voice to see a familiar woman.

"Yes? Why does it feel like I know you from somewhere?" I asked.

"What? I've never met you but I knew your father... I think." she said.

"Well who are you?" I asked in a protective tone putting the girls behind me.

"I'm Jane Foster, I worked for your father before I was fired, due to budget cuts." she said. "Your father told me so much about you while we worked together. He would say that you were too advanced for your classes, that you were the top student."

"Yeah I was. I heard of you too. My dad used to talk about how dedicated you were to the work, but he was devastated when he had to fire you. Are you the new foster mom?" I asked. She nodded. I walked over to her and motioned for the girls to follow. We walked over to a car and got in the back seat. We buckled in, then I looked in the passengers side to see another woman about the same age as Jane.

"These are the girls?" she asked Jane and she nodded. Then the woman turned to face us. "Hi girls I'm Darcy, Janes' co-worker." she said while smiling and waving to us. I waved back to her and smiled. When I looked at the girls. They clung on to me like their life depended on it. I bent down to their ears.

"Come on she won't bite, say hi and wave to her. It's the polite thing to do." I whispered in a soothing voice to where only the girls could hear. They looked up at me and nodded slowly, still unsure of whether they could trust either of the women.

"Hi Darcy." they said in unison while waving to her. Darcy smiled and looked at me weird, as if I did something that amazed her.

"What did I do?" I asked her.

"I'll tell you when we get to the apartment. It's just I don't know how you do it." she stated. I nodded and turned my attention to what was outside the window. People and buildings passed us as we rode in the car. I felt the girls' grips loosen one by one. I looked down to find them falling back to sleep. I smiled and looked back out the window. I heard a screeching sound and looked out the windshield, an 18 wheeler was about to ram into our car. I instinctively wrapped my arms around the girls, bracing for the impact. I had my eyes shut, waiting for the car to slam into the truck, but nothing happened. I opened my eyes slowly to see that everything had become still. It was as if time was frozen, I decided to take advantage of this and unbuckled myself, the girls, Jane, and Darcy. I opened the door and tossed Lilly over my shoulder and grabbed Kara and Tera in my arms. I carried them out of the car and to a sidewalk a safe distance away from the car, and laid them on the ground. I then ran back and grabbed Jane and dragged her limp body towards the girls. I ran back to get Darcy when I noticed that the cars were going very slowly. I freaked thinking that whatever happened was starting to wear off. I dashed as fast as my legs could carry me to the car, took Darcy and then the cars were starting to get about a millisecond faster every few seconds. I felt my adrenaline coursing through my body that gave me a boost of energy, and I used it to get to the others. I laid Darcy with the others and looked around and saw that the car behind ours had a baby seat in it, so i ran towards it and took the baby out and ran back. I placed the baby in Janes' lap and turned around and ran back to the car behind ours, thankfully there was only one other person in the car. I unbuckled them and carried them bridal style because they were a lot lighter than they looked. By the time I got back the cars were picking up speed more quickly. I sat the woman I was carrying on the sidewalk and put her baby in her lap. I turned around and saw that everything was almost back to normal speed again. A minute later it was back to normal speed and the 18 wheeler slammed into our car, if we were still inside we would be dead for sure. The car behind ours ran right into the 18 wheeler. If the mother and the child were still in there, the mother would either be paralyzed from neck down or dead, and the baby would have either died from the pressure of the impact or be severely injured probably having a concussion, broken ribs, fractures, and possibly internal bleeding because the baby seat wasn't put in properly so it would've flown and hit the broken windshield. I looked at the seven lives I had just saved.

"WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED?! One second we were in the now completely demolished car, and the next we're on the sidewalk far away from the car." Darcy said while looking around for answers from any of us. I felt my face heat up. I cleared my throat.

" Darcy... I don't exactly know what happened, but all I know is that what ever happened gave me enough time to get you, Jane, the girls, this mother and her very adorable baby girl to safety, and not in those cars of which we would've died if whatever happened, didn't happen. I know it sounds crazy... but I think that it's a sign that we don't have only one chance at life, that maybe some people get more than one. I don't care about, if what you think is different than what I think." I said with confidence. They all stared at me with disbelief written on their faces. Then the random woman I saved spoke up.

"Why did you save me and my baby? You don't even know me." she asked. I stared at her for a few seconds.

"I saved you because all life is precious, if you were in my shoes wouldn't you? Just think, if I hadn't decided to save you and your child you wouldn't be talking to me right now." I replied. She nodded and stood up with her little bundle of joy in her arms and hugged me. I could hear Jane and Darcy babbling about what they thought just happened.

"Thank you so much, I don't know how to repay you." she whispered in my ear.

"No you don't have to owe me anything, I just did it so no one would have to mourn over two loved ones, trust me I know what it's like, I'm mourning over the loss of my parents. They were killed when New York was invaded." I said, she broke the hug and looked at me with pity. "See those 3 girls over there?" I said while pointing to them. She nodded. "Well you see most of them lost both their parents the way I lost mine and one lost only one parent but..." I leaned close to her ear and whispered. "I don't know if the other parent will come back because they're fighting in a war, but they've shown me to never look back to the past, to stay in the present, and always look into the future, and to never give up hope." she looked at me and smiled. "Now get to where ever you were going, remember what I said, and who knows...maybe we'll see each other again." She smiled and walked off.

I turned to the girls, Jane, and Darcy. They were looking at me like I was crazy. I walked over to them and bent down and hugged the girls. When my arms wrapped around them they hugged back instantly. I felt another two pairs of arms wrap around us and smiled. "Shall we get to the apartment so we can all calm down from our near death experiences?" I suggested. I felt their arms unravel off of me.

"I think that would be best." Jane stated. I held Teras' hand, Tera held Karas', and Kara held Lillys' as we all followed Jane and Darcy to their apartment.
