Author's note: Before you begin, I'd like to just say thanks for reading this. I'd like your opinion and if I can get enough support for this, I'll continue updating. I haven't written in a long time.

Tonight was the night. The night which would prove once and for all whether I was a disappointment or not. I stood on the highest rock near the cliff. This was my favourite place to hide.

It was sunset, nearing twilight. I felt my body, especially my stomach, growl in excitement. Or was it hunger? I was unsure. I didn’t know what it felt like, but I hoped anyway that it was a sign of my existence as a feline hybrid.

The full moon seemed to peek through a single cloud. A wailing wind whipped up and whistled through the branches of the nearby trees. I shivered in the cool air. I should have brought a jacket, but I thought it would be ruined by the time I transformed.

It became darker, as I stayed waiting. I watched the last of the sunlight fade and the moonlight become ever stronger. It seemed to be invigorating, as I felt the strength being pumped inside of me. What a surreal sensation!

Suddenly, a branch snapped behind me. I turned around quickly to find one of my friends, Leo, standing there.

“What are you doing here?” he crowed wide-eyed. “You’re not meant to be here."

“Why not?” I asked stubbornly. “This is my place.”

“Go away! Before they catch you!” he yelled at me. “Go on, scram!”

“Why?” I repeated, wounded from his words. “And what makes you so special that you get to stay?”

“Just go!” he barked out. He ripped off his jacket. He was so much bigger than me that his jacket covered me. “You don’t understand.” His voice almost pleaded in a whisper then. This was not the Leo I was used to. He had always seemed so much more secretive.

His arms were changing. I was seeing it with my very own eyes. Fur began to cover it where the moonlight hit. A tail appeared and his face was becoming less and less like the teenage appearance I was accustomed to. It was scary and remarkable at the same time.

“Wait, that means you’re a feline-” I began, awe struck.

Jealousy seemed to explode in my veins. He wasn’t a disappointment, unlike myself, who didn’t seem to change at all yet, but it was too early to determine whether I would be or not. Being the third offspring of two feline hybrids, I was expected to change early. Yet, I was still waiting.

“-a feline hybrid? Yes, I am,” he finished. “But the chief is coming tonight. Up here. A human like yourself would be slaughtered easily. You have to leave!”

“What if I told you that my parents are hybrids too?” I countered. I wanted to test the reaction of his face, just something to lessen the seriousness in this atmosphere. He gave me a straight face.

"That would mean you should’ve changed by now,” he answered simply. That was true and it stung.

“I only turned of age a week ago,” I spat in defence.

        He just frowned.

A second later, his ears twitched. “Leave! They’re almost here.”

        “But-”

“Darn, they’re here already,” he said, lowering his voice. He was alright if he changed his attitude so quickly. “Ok, I’m just going to keep you hidden then.”

        “No. I want to watch.”

“Fine. I always knew you were feisty, but never this bad.”

        I pinched him from behind.

“Don’t test me now,” he whispered sternly.

The elders stood in formation and discussed something. It was inaudible and broken. Some hybrids raised their voices part of the way through. After the meeting, one of the adult hybrids came over towards us and talked to Leo.

“Why were you here? You know the rules. You do not listen in on Elder meetings, Leo, unless you are an adult. This is so unlike you to behave like this.” The adult voice spoke, shaking his head. I recognised this voice as one of the fathers of someone from school.

“Nothing. I wanted to see the view and then you guys rocked up,” he replied as coolly as he could muster. I could tell he was nervous. He wasn’t one to disobey rules.

“Then why is your jacket off?” He pointed to the jacket covering me.

“It’s too warm for it,” he retaliated.

“It’s winter. You should be wearing it.”

The father grabbed the jacket, without realising I was underneath. Leo protested but couldn’t convince him. The man, who I now recognised as the chief of our town, noticed me and narrowed his eyes.

“Why is she here?” he bellowed at Leo. “You know the rules! No humans allowed. We need to dispose of her. Immediately.”

Some men came over to hold me still. I tried to pull away and escape, but it was to no avail.

A shiver ran up and down my spine. I was going to be like road kill, an empty carcass from my own kind.
