"She's not human, Dad!" Leo yelled. Wait. The angry man was his father?
Somewhere in the distance, I heard murmuring. I could only just make out the outline of my own parents coming towards me in the dimmed evening light.
"Leave her alone!" This voice belonged to my mother. "She's my daughter, Chief."
"Well, she shouldn't have been here. What was she doing?" Leo's father, the chief, asked.
"Waiting to change," I said, hanging my head low in shame.
It was now that the full moon shone brightly from behind the lingering cloud. The crowd gasped.
"Let her down," Leo's father slowly ordered to the half-men who were holding me.
It was like I was an alien. Whispering seemed to erupt from the crowd. What had happened?
I ran to the nearby river and observed myself. I had finally changed at the last moment, although I seemed to be more cat than human. Unruly fur was sprawled everywhere, my tail and sharp teeth had formed and my fingernails had changed to claws. I had no cat ears, which was strange. My fur was a faded black with hints of grey, a colour I'd never seen before.
Leo came to greet me. Feeling scared at the lack of cat's ears, a staple of feline hybrid kind, I stepped backwards cautiously. I eyed his every move towards me. Animosity had become my friend, since I realised I had disappointed my parents long ago.
"Tyra, listen to me," he called out, as if reading my mind. "You don't need to be scared. It takes ages. It took me a week before I actually had the ears."
I calmed down and sat there.
"But your fur is something extraordinary," Leo said, wrapping his fingers in my fur, as he sat down beside me. Sure, it was strange, but my instincts said to let this happen as it did.
In a movie, this is the scene where the couple were about to kiss, yet this was life. Leo was a friend and we never had a relationship. I didn't think of him in that way. In fact, I refused to think of him this way.
I opened my mouth to speak, but he said something first. "Well... it seems that I was too harsh on you before... y-you truly are one of us. Plus, I was supposed to tell you. I'm to assist you for a while, until you're up for everything."
"You mean my Master?" I said, snarling at the word. As much as I was stubborn, I hated being inferior.
"No. They specifically told me to tell you that I'd still be your friend," he replied, although now he just sounded uncertain. It felt like he was withholding certain information, crucial information at that.
I decided not to ask him, in fear that I was going too fast too soon. Everything had happened so quickly already. It had only been minutes since I had figured my friend was another fellow feline hybrid.
I forced myself not to look at him. My eyes darted to my attire. I saw my baggy clothes for the night. They seemed to be much tighter than before my transformation. I was right to have worn baggy clothes at least. My eyes drooped. The transformation had been exhausting.
"Tyra, listen," Leo began again. He seemed to be searching for the right words. "I have one last thing to tell you, but they didn't want to you to know this yet. Your fur. I've never seen anything like it and neither has anyone else. We all believe that means you were the rightful owner of the land, the Solar Heir."
"Wait, what?" I said. I must have been dreaming.
"Are you okay, Tyra?" Leo asked again. I jumped up in surprise. I had fallen on to his shoulder and slept. How embarrassing! "Oh, it must've been your first time, wasn't it?"
I nodded.
"It's okay," he whispered. "You're just a late-bloomer. It's been a while since a late-bloomer has waited for their ears to set in. You're unique. It suits your personality, I think."
"Are you flirting with me?" I asked teasingly.
"No, just the truth, that," he replied. He sighed and gave me his jacket.
I smiled weakly.
"Let's go home."
"Hm," I mumbled, falling back asleep.
