Percy POV
~~~~Dream/Flashback~~~~
The Fates are about leave but the question is still buzzing in my mind. They left me on the island for three days before coming back. I have to ask them now.
"Wait!" I yell.
"Yes?" Atropos asks.
"Why me?" I ask. "Why not anyone else?" They pause and look at each other before Clotho speaks.
"Long ago there was a prophecy-"
"Great another one," I mutter. She ignores me and continues.
"A prophecy so old we are probably the only ones who remember it." She takes a breath before she continues.
"As one evil falls three soon arise
A hero lost must return, and so he rises
He will be trained by those of the thread
Or once again fall dead
In the end four of his lie still
Four almost cause him to lose his will
The sky, the beauty, the healer, and the slayer
To defeat the evils his final prayer
The flaw slowly tears him apart
Once thinking of ending his own heart
The evils defeat the hero or the evils life is cost
Either way the hero is lost"
The Fates stare at me and wait for my reaction. I stare unsure of what to say. In the end four of his will lie still... The sky, the beauty, the healer, and the slayer... Either way the hero is lost... The Fates say nothing more and flash out.
"Ow," I groan waking up. I feel like I was hit by a bus. I open my eyes. I am in my bed, on top of the blanket The Fates watching me. I sit up slowly. Lachesis hands me a square of ambrosia and I take and eat it gratefully.
"So... Who needs to be dead?" I ask. I know that's a really weird question but for the past year or so the Fates have turned me into their personal assassin until the prophecy starts anyway. They never really come here anymore unless it is to give me another job.
They basically think some lives should be ended earlier. For example I saw Luke's thread cut at age 12 but he died a hero four years later. I don't like the job but I don't have choice. Though it is good for about five seconds when I see other people. Then I realize what I am supposed to be doing. I can't talk to them either. It one of The Fates three rules.
1. Don't get caught
2. Don't be seen or heard
3. Don't speakWhen I'm not being an assassin I'm here on the island living my usual life.
"Do you remeber what happened before you fell unconscious?" Clotho asks. I pause think for a moment as it comes back to me.
"I killed the hydra," I answer with a smile. "Then I fell off Blackjack..."
"That was four days ago. We saw you falling and brought you here."
"What? Four days?"
"You used a lot of your energy. The more often you practice it the easier it shall come."
"But right now you are ready," Lachesis says. She walks out the room and I follow them outside my house, toward the spot where the beach and forest meet. It's dark out.
"You are soon ready to face your fate. Though your flaw holds you back. We need to fix that." As she says this my friends appear.
The rest of the seven, Grover, Clarisse, Nico, Thalia, Stolls, Will, Katie, and Reyna. I smile but it quickly fades when Atropos says,
"They aren't real. Merely illusions."
"So what am I supposed to do?" I ask uncertainly.
"Kill them."
Annabeth POV
I collapse on my bunk and nightmares get me again. Though tonight is different.
I had been dreaming about Tartarus and the arai but now the dream switches.
Instead I see Percy. He is crying and seems to be begging someone. I can't see who and I can't hear him. Behind him I see myself and the rest of the seven, Grover, Clarisse, Nico, Thalia, Stolls, Will, Katie, and Reyna. We all stand smiling at Percy as he cries. He begs again and this time some invisble force knocks him back a few feet.
He slowly gets up and turns to face the other me and everyone else. He takes Riptide out his pocket and uncaps it. He gets in a fighting stance but tears only seem to fall faster. But then the other me and everyone else had their weapons. We all attack him. He deflects them all easily but it seems we are going for the kill. He only stays on defense until he is thrown back again. He nods slowly and suddenly a wave comes and encircles the other me and everyone else. He looks over at someone and says something. He flinches and the wave crashes down. Everyone inside drowns. I drowned.
Percy falls to the ground crying. He hugs himself and releases the wave the corpses fall to the ground and suddenly vanish.
He stands up and speaks to someone before walking into a small house. He climbs the stairs and flops down on a bed still crying until he falls asleep.
I wake up to Malcolm shaking me. Everyone is getting up. He says something but I'm not listening. I throw some clothes on and run out of my cabin and to the Big House. I bang on the door until Chiron comes and opens it.
"Annabeth. What can I do for you?" He asks.
"I had a dream. About Percy."
Percy POV
I'm still crying as I pick myself up off the ground and walk over to where the Fates are waiting.
"You are ready. We will come collect you soon," Lachesis says before they flash out. I'm don't even try to figure out what they mean. I just head to my bedroom and lay down. Not even nothing to flash into my pajamas or go under the blanket. Tears still come and I can't stop them.
I killed my friends... I think sadly.
They were just illusions. Another part of my brain argues.
Illusions of my friends. My family.
So? You've killed other people and monsters. They weren't illusions. They had friends and family.
Shut up!
...
I'm not sure how long I lay there but I soon fall asleep.
