*****Present***** Maddox POV
BEEP BEEP BEEP!
I reach over and slap the top of my alarm clock. "Five more minutes couldn't make much of a difference right? I mean I should still be able to get ready and be out the door in time to get to work." As I think to myself I peek over at the clock to see what time it actually was. "Shit, five more minutes isn't going to happen." I have to be at work in 30 minutes. I jump out of bed and run to the bathroom. "No time for a shower" I look myself over in the mirror "I'll just throw it up in a ponytail and no one will notice." I think as I begin to gather my mousy brown hair into a high pony. I grab the slacks off the floor and the purple blouse from a chair in my room. I start throwing clothes on while I bounce my way into the kitchen. I grab a loaf of bread and slap two pieces into the toaster. I run back into the bathroom to assess if I should bother with makeup or not. I take look at the mess in front of me and decide to slap on some foundation and call it good. I hear the toast pop up as I run past the kitchen. I grab a pair of black slip ons and make my way back into the kitchen for my toast. I slather the two pieces with some butter and wrap them in a paper towel. Grabbing my keys and my purse I head out the door. "Yes a new record! Only took me 10 minutes to get ready. I probably could have slept for another 5 minutes." I think to myself as begin to pull out of my driveway. I make my way to the library where I currently work. It is a fairly old style building, very Gothic, gargoyles on the roof and all. I unlock the back entrance and make my way into the break room.
"Dang Maddox I think that this is the first time that you have ever been on time." Mich proclaims without even looking up from his newspaper.
"Good Morning Michel, I see you are in a pleasant mood as always." I respond while taking a seat and grabbing my toast. I eat the pieces quickly as I begin to make mental note of what needs to be done before we open. "Have you gotten everything out of the drop box yet?"
"Nope" He responds putting extra emphasis on the p. I stand and walk towards the door on the other side of the room, I look over the keys that are hanging there and grab the one labeled "Drop".
"Alright I will take care of it." I call over my shoulder as I begin to walk out of the room. I retrieve the books from the box and begin checking everything in and putting them away. I go about doing all my other work. Michel unlocks the doors and lets me know that we are open now. Most of the day flies by pretty quickly until about 3 pm. The air seemed to get thicker and colder. Something was wrong, I sat down and took a couple of deep breaths. Just then I had hear the bells on the door ringing, I stand up to greet whomever was coming in. I plaster a smile on my face. A man saunters into view. He pays me no attention as he scans the shelves of books next to the door. Honestly he is the most beautiful person that I have ever laid eyes on. He short black hair, chiseled jawline and bright blue eyes. I sat there for a moment not able to take my eyes off of him.
"I think you drooled a bit." Mich whispers to me from somewhere behind me. I quickly wipe my face and there is nothing there.
"What are you doing up here, what if someone needs help in fiction?" Ask whilst rolling my eyes at his previous statement.
"I needed some book tape. Some kid decided try and rip a couple of pages out of one of the books. I stopped him before they were out though." He say while shaking his head. I point to a drawer behind him.
"I should have some in there." He opens the drawer and pulls out the roll of tape.
"Perfect, so are you gonna talk to him or just keep staring?" Mich turn back towards me and aks with a smile.
"I will do neither, I am working and I should stay professional." I stand a little straighter trying to look as professional as possible. Even if I had the courage to talk to him he would still be way out of my league. He is like model status and I can't even be bothered to wash my hair everyday. Mich laughs and walks away. I look back to where Mr. model was perusing the shelves and he is no longer there. I sit back down and pull out the book I was working through. It is just a random book I found on ancient Greek mythology. Since I can remember I have always been fascinated by Greek literature and how they lived their lives. I couldn't shake this weird sense of foreboding that I had. I heard someone clear their throat, I look up and Mr. model smiles down at me. I feel a shiver run down my body.
"Hello sorry to bother you, I just wanted to check these out." He lifts up a couple of books that he has in his right hand.
"N.not a problem." I hop up from my seat and reach for his books.
"I don't think I have ever seen you here before are you new." He asks while still smiling at me. I am trying to avoid making eye contact with him, because I feel like I will start staring at him again.
"I used to be part time while I was in school, but, I am full time for the summer. May I have your card please?" He hands me his card and I busy myself with checking him out. I scan hi card and his name pops up on my screen Devin Daimon. I finished checking him out and handed him his books and receipt. "They are due back in two weeks and if you need an extension you can visit our website and renew them from there. Is there anything else I can help you with?" I use my best customer service smile on him. I finally make eye contact with him, everything stops. It feels as if the rest of world has disappeared and we are the only things left. I can't move I am just stuck staring at him.
"Uh um, I am sorry I was going to ask you something but I seem to have forgotten." He is no longer smiling he looks as confused as I feel. "Do you want to have coffee with me sometime." He asks. I contemplate the offer, he makes me feel uneasy.
"I am sorry but, no." I give him an apologetic smile. I don't know what this feeling is between us but I do not think it is a good thing. He stares at me for a moment bewildered as if he wasn't expecting me to rejecting him.
"Not a problem you have a good rest of your day." He waves at me as he walks away.
