I call myself Zena tho I was born with an Indigenous name, Hah Zin Ak. Somewhere along my life line, Zena or Zina, became.
I grew up living in British Columbia's bible-belt surrounded by white people.
Me. My Granny.
"Zena. Doncha hear them knocking?"
I almost peed my baby panties, running to hide behind the couch!
Granny (now I know, but didn't know then!) rammered her weathered knuckles against our delapitated rezz walls.
"Zena. White Man coming!'
Dude. Sometimes I still feel like hiding behind the couch. Friends and family, I have a door bell!

I grew up poor, like the poorest Indians in our rezz brought us food and clothes out of pity (when I was a toddler).
Heat and healthy food? Nah... we were lucky to have one or both.Times have changed, I have a family of my own. A beautiful house and husband. Life is good.
