Part 13

Often, Lexi wondered about her position in life. If she believed that she was led through a series of events to be placed here by a larger imaginary person like Fate or God, then was it some sort of joke that the same emotions placed inside her was tearing her apart?

Pacing across the room over and over again wasn’t helping her think, but she had the suspicion that it was a cause of entertainment for her best friend, as she could still hear Alvron’s sniggering whenever she turned around to make another stride back the way she came.

Cara mia, you will burn the carpet sooner or later by how you’re pacing over them.” Alvron finally offered, and she stopped in the middle, right in front of where he sat, relaxing on the bed, hands under his head in a show of total relaxation.

She felt herself frowning at her best friend, but garnered no reaction from him as he continued grinning like a Cheshire cat at her.

“Aren’t you the least bit worried at what will happen to us here? We’re in a townhouse full of vampires! Any one of them can just come in and suck us dry, and the next time we meet will be up there with our parents, with halos over our heads!” She knew she was over-dramatizing things, but there were a million ways her situation at the moment could go sour. If she pissed off just any one of the vampires, all of them would be after her. If she got anything from the chat with Sky, then it was the fact that they were one close, happy family.

Even if the one they call Jack Crowley seemed to have differences with Dante.

Infernio always seemed like a better choice for me, darlin’. I’ll be there, bitchin’ with the Devil over number of women I’ve had. You know; I always had the impression that the girls down there are usually wilder and sexier since lust is considered a major sin.” Alvron offered with a soft laugh at her dramatics, and she gave him a scowl before she resumed pacing.

This was the problem with her best friend. Initially, she’d thought that it was a Casanova-thing for him to breeze past everything, but now that the identity of Dante as a Casanova was clear, Lexi was all too aware of the fact that it wasn’t a Casanova-thing. Alvron was, by far, the laziest, devil-may-care person she’d ever come to know, and he had no more excuses to come up for it.

“You’re not taking things seriously, Alvron. We could be in mortal danger.” She scolded, but couldn’t help thinking about the piece of information that her best friend leaked. “What makes you think the angels aren’t as hot?”

Alvron’s grin grew wider at the fact that Lexi was entertaining his thoughts –and questioning them –as he bounced upright, then plopped stomach-down on the soft mattress to be watching Lexi.

“Think about it; they’re always covered in their white robes. Aren’t they hiding their curves up? It makes a man think. What are they hiding beneath those robes? They could be really shapely beneath, or they could be really physically bad beneath. But look at devil girls. They’re always showing off skin. Okay, the tails may be turn-off sometimes, but I’ll take a shapely, bikini-clad devil girls over a prude, robed-up angels anytime.” Alvron reasoned in a firm tone of voice, and Lexi was amazed at how serious her best friend could sound at a conversation topic as ridiculous as the one they were discussing over.

Lexi was about to come up with a snarky reply, but was interrupted by gentle knocks on the door. She wasn’t sure to be honored or confused at the fact that the door was knocked. Did the vampires respect them enough to respect their privacy, or were they just doing it to keep things normal? She was pretty sure that any one of them could just walk into the room without asking, and even if she tried blocking the door, the vampires would still open it with their super strength.
