shuffling feet. quickly averted eyes. occasional clink of metal.
a throne of hard concrete. a crown of matted braids.
unquenchable hunger. bone chilling cold.
but for her, all this was bliss. after all, the eyes paid no attention to her anymore. she had escaped them.
the ignoring eyes, the eyes of the present, skipped over her. to her, they were much kinder and safer than before. before, the eyes of the past were of hunger, of a predator stalking its prey. they made her feel inhuman, nothing more than an object for others' entertainment.
but then again, those eyes had at least made her feel something. fear. desperation. pain. but these new eyes just made her explore her inside- the inner workings of her mind. a place she most certainly did not want to go.
her own eyes told a story. her story. a tale in which a naive girl thought the world was as gentle as a flower, only to have this realization crushed as soon as she took a step outside of the fairytale realm she had created. and as the walls around her crumbled and she fell down the rabbit hole into a whole new world, she became familiar with a pain. a pain that she never in her life knew existed. so she built up new walls inside herself and decided that storybooks were just stories and her life was not gonna end in 'happy ever after'.
she glanced at the paper cup gathering donations in front of her after deciding that the rumbling of her stomach was calling for a feast. but as she sorted through the change, all she had gained was a bit more than 3 dollars. only enough to get her a small meal at a fast food heaven. it certainly was not enough to get her anywhere that she needed to go or provide her with what she craved.
maybe these current eyes were even worse than the ones in the past. the ones in the past provided her with something. food. a bed. a daily fix. but these eyes did nothing. these eyes were not going to keep her alive.
and with that realization in mind, she stood up and tottered off to a familiar corner in a familiar neighborhood with a familiar feeling in her chest. a feeling she never knew the name of. a feeling that excited her but scared her. a feeling that made her happy yet sad. a feeling that brought her never ending joy but also eternal misery. what she did not know was that feeling was not an emotion as she originally thought but something else entirely.
it was what birds felt when they flew. what prisoners experienced when they stepped out of the cell walls. what she had felt when she first left her princess castle behind.
this feeling was freedom.
