2. happy endings
Their footsteps echoed as they walked out of the empty school together. Classes ended early, but they decided to lag and clean their lockers up a bit so that they'll have more space for more junk.
"Kath, I'll be heading for the pizza place. You wanna come with?" Marcus asked as they neared the door. Truthfully, Katherine wanted to bail out and just head for the covers until the sun goes away, but since it was Marcus, she decided to stay.
Why she decided that, it's simply because she likes him.
"I'll come, too. I haven't had pizza in forever," she exaggerated earning a funny look from Marcus. Usually, he'd have a witty comeback to whatever his best friend said but he figured he'd leave her for a while this time.
Marcus stopped dead on his tracks and so did Katherine. "What is it, M?" Katherine spoke softly. Marcus liked it when she used that nickname and oh how bad he wanted her to call him that everyday. The brunet stepped forward and sighed.
"Kath, do you really want to get pizza or stop by the sweets shop? I know you hate loud places so I just figured you'd like a change of scenery," Marcus blurted out all of a sudden. Katherine was surprised at the invite and she was also surprised by the fact that he knew her inner want of going to that sweets shop instead of the noisy pizza place.
Katherine grinned. "I'd love to go straight for the sweets shop, if you don't mind," she said, a radiant aura emitting from her as she spoke.
God only forbid Marcus from passing out then and there.
"We're leaving for college soon, huh."
Marcus halted from licking his second popsicle. Katherine was wearing a glum expression and she didn't want to hide the fact that time was moving quickly and sooner or later, she and Marcus would be separated because of their choices.
The fact that she can't even confess her love for him irks her the most, but whatever.
"Yeah. You'll be attending Yale, right?" Marcus asked her and she nodded. "And I'm headed off to Penn State, huh?"
Katherine nodded, more gloomy this time. She can't believe that she was going to be separated from her best friend and - probably - for good, this time. Katherine finished the last of her popsicle and stood from the bench where they were seated before flashing an encouraging smile.
"No use in becoming so sad all of a sudden! Come on, we still have calculus homework to attend to!" Katherine started to walk speedily and Marcus was only about to stand when she suddenly halted in her tracks.
Sensing that something was up, he quickly sprinted to her side and found her crying. Marcus's heart ached as he saw the love of her life cry like the absolute kid she is and so resorted into pulling her in a tight embrace.
"Idiot. You were the one who brought up the topic," he mumbled softly as he stroked her hair. Katherine's sobs were muffled by his shirt but he could not deny the next few words that tumbled out of her mouth.
"It's because I wanted to tell you that I'd go with you wherever you want to because I like you."
Marcus was taken aback by the sudden confession and right then, Katherine pushed him away and off she went.
What in the hell did I just fucking say? her thoughts said.
I just fucking confessed to my best friend, another thought swam.
I am such an idiot, she thought of lastly before she disappeared into the streets.
