9. cinema
I held the ticket close to my chest, a feeling of anxiety waiting to burst out from it.
It was my first time in the cinema. And honestly speaking, I was scared of coming here on my own but I had to. The movie was for our class and I'd initially planned to watch it with my friend but he wasn't here today.
I was all on my own.
I scanned the area, hoping to find a familiar face to banter with. Of course, I was not really that close with anyone outside my friend group but I was determined to find someone to talk to.
I spotted a group of boys I usually hung out with. They were bopping each other in the heads and I had this feeling to join in their fun just to get rid of the nagging feeling of emptiness. I took three steps going towards them before I stopped myself and turned around.
"No way. No. I am on a mission," I said myself and zipped my jacket up fully. I took a seat on one of the benches outside the cinema and looked at the time on my phone. "Only thirty minutes before the doors open," I mumble to myself.
"Is that so?" I heard a voice say beside me and I turned around to look at the source. He had a cute yet mysterious smile and eyes that seemed like he knew something about you. I stared into them then at his hair - which was all over the place - before smiling back. "Are you here to watch that controversial film, too?" I asked.
He nodded, his dimples showing as he smiled (widely this time). "Yeah. I was supposed to go with my parents, but they had other agendas," he said and inched a bit closer to me. He smelled of peppermint and chocolate and I can't help but inch a bit closer until our legs were touching.
"How about you? Are you on your own, too?" he asked. He was facing me now while I sat up straight and staring ahead. I looked sideways and I saw him waiting for my answer (which I forgot to give because God forbid those eyes to be so alluring). "Yeah. I intentionally went to the movies alone because I wanted a change in the scene," I told him and he nodded.
"I agree," he said and I smiled. "I think it's nice to take some sort of break from the people you know once in a while," he added. I turned to face him and curiously asked, "You came by yourself on purpose, too, I can feel it. Am I right?"
"Was it too obvious?" he asked me with a grin. I nodded and we both laughed, strangers starting to turn into friends. "I'm sorry. I didn't want to sound uncool in front of a lady," he said and I felt my face heat up. "A lady?"
"What's wrong? Or did I offend you?" he said and held his hands up for good measure. I shook my head. "No. It's just that no one has ever addressed me as a lady before." His eyes grew large at the statement and for a moment, I saw that they were the color of the skies before it cries.
I love it.
He laughed and it was nice. "I'm glad I was the first one to call you that," he said and I laughed. I looked around and saw that the doors to the cinema were already open and I stood. "They're already letting people in," I said.
He stood from where he was seated and held out a hand. "Do you want to sit together? I think I needed a friend after all," he asked me and my hand slowly approached his. At the contact, I felt warm all over and I looked up at him and his eyes spoke something I've never seen from people before.
Please go with me.
I nodded. "I'm fine with that," I said, finally accepting his offer. We linked hands and entered the cinema, a new feeling surging through me.
I have a new mission now. And this time, I'm not so scared of it at all.
