11. white noise

What is a friend?

Gilbert Jones drifts into the background, but is "saved" by the people around him. He walks the halls and converses with people but to him, they're just white noise. He laughs and kids around them, but never makes a connection with them.

What is a friend? What is a connection?

Gilbert paces in his room, talking on his phone. Essays, assignments, quizzes, reports. The never-ending cycle of students being pushed to do things for the sake of repaying their parents back their money. The drone goes on and the white noise remains.

What is a friend? What is a connection? Why is it never-ending?

Gilbert makes his way to the rooftop, a simple place of solitude. From afar, everything seems like a stranger to him, but in reality, everything is familiar. From the lighted streets, to the people passing by, to the rumbling cars weaving through roads. The city is a busy place but nothing makes sense.

What is a friend? What is a connection? Why is it never-ending? Why is it senseless?

Gilbert looks over the rooftop and on to the ground. That seems like a nice place to sleep in, he thinks and he smiles. But not tonight, he thinks to himself. Gilbert smiles to himself and re-enters his bedroom.

The white noise may stay. But only a bit more.
